water filtration

what is a good place to buy a filter that can purify water?
like one i could take river water and drink it after its been thru it?

Iodine tablets for the win!
EDIT: if you are talking about backpackin iodine tabs are the way to go. Don't buy a filter. Tabs are alot lighter/cheeper/smaller then any filter you can buy. Plus, you have to have SOME standing water for a filter to work. With tabs, you could melt snow and they will work.

River water?
You need to check out Brigade Quartermasters or your local Army Surplus store.

You can get straws with filters built into them. Same with canteens.
Purification tabs are also good.

BTW any backpacking store will have filter systems or tabs that you can buy. REI has a good selection IIRC.

If you hate the taste of iodine (or worry that it's going to kill you), you an buy this chemical that neutralizes the iodine. So you stick hte iodine in, let it stand for the 30 minutes, then put in the chemical before you drink it.

depends on the application...portable or stationary.

iodine/bleach/boiling will do in a pinch.
small sediment/carbon filter, or reverse osmosis can be some what portable.
large sediment/carbon filter, reverse osmosis, ozone, ultra violet, or distillation can be use in stationary application.

this is stationary for my home. i want to be able to take any water within reason, and make it like dasani

If its for the home I would recommend a Brita. It did well enough for me over the years. You can get them in pitcher assemblies and other types.

i was hoping for something a little better than the pitcher type. i was thinking UV rays even.
even if its a few hundred $$ thats fine.

You can even distill and purify Vodka in Britas. Invest in one.

One of the cheapest and easyest solution is 2 or 3 stage sediment/cabon filter that is great to have good water tasting (20-30 micron/5-.01 micron, most application .2 to .1 micron carbon is more than adequate and serve as a water softener to take out chlorine).

The best for home use is RO (reverse osmosis) and combine with carbon filter you will have water that taste better than bottle water (no plastic smell/taste or chlorine).

[add]
above solutions are great for under sink or entire house filtration application.

The Katadyn backpacking filter I bought from REI has served me well. A lot of High Sierra mountain water has passed through that little filter.

The micron filtration size is one of the key parameters to pay attention to.

Our California mountains are contaminanted with Giardia, brought in by the cowboys' & gold miners' livestock long ago. Giardia is what, around 0.1 micron? I don't remember.

My Katadyn filters down to 0.2 microns, which theoretically would allow Giardia through, but it's never gotten me sick. MIne is an older model of this one.

Newer models (see link below) probably have better filtration.

Recommendation: don't buy a cheapie, get a top quality filter.

A sampling of them, and a place to buy them online, is here.

No. I don't drink. 😛

But all the people on here keep on saying that putting vodka in a filter makes it as good as top shelf vodka.

UV is (the relatively expensive bulb burn out and constantly needed to be on) more expensive than the previous 2 method and require carbon filter to soften & take out chlorine taste, and it may require sediment filter as well.

Best is to find out from the local dealer to see what you need, because it depends on your local city/well water.

2 stage is good if the local water doesn't have too much sediment, and 3 stage maybe needed if city or well water is poor.

Find a system that have the lowest filter cost/gallon of water, because the filter will cost more in the long run when compare to the rest of the equipment.

Is this for a camping trip? If so, filters and iodine become obsolete a few years ago with the invention of these new chlorine drops: Aqua Mira

They are odorless, tasteless and safer than iodine and especially filters (most of the compact models will not catch some of the most common parasites).
