I'm guessing the goal was colliding the "bounce" of the first water drop with the incoming second water drop. Reading strobist?

I like it. I'll give it a shot as well. But I agree that the background is a bit distracting.

sorry. Late post..

I did have an blue sky with white clouds background paper... but may be the end is more white than blue. (if you look at the reflection of the water you could see it)
as far as equipment. canon 40D and 100mm macro on a tripod (non-USM one). 430ex to the backdrop with a wireless flush unit (CTR-301p). Colored water using baby medicine drop from up above.
