If you have a hose with a nozzle that is close and you leave the water running, will you get billed for it assuming that there is no leakage? In other words, would this just be the same as the faucet being closed?

I'm just wondering because my water bill for irrigation shot up to $500. Since I don't have a sprinkler system, my irrigation fee has always been $0. I'm trying to figure out how in a month's time frame I consumed 189,900 gallons. I have a garden hose that I use to wash the car, but even with that my past irrigation bills were always 0 gallons. Tsk..

If the nozzle is closed and there is no leak, there is no water being consumed. This goes for inside the house and out.

If the faucet is closed you are not using any water so>>>>

You must have a water leak. Check the water meter and see if the little indicator wheel is turning with all the water turned off. If it is you have a water leak somewhere ( it may be underground).

They could have made a mistake also.

Did you check the meter reading? I got a larger than normal water bill a few months ago and it turns out the meter was read wrong.

My bill shows to categories. One for irrigation and the other one just says water. The water category is whatever I'm using in the house. Irrigation has always been the same number since I got the house until it shot up to something higher last month.

so if you don't have a sprinkler system, then evidently its an error. whats so hard to figure out about that.

Do you have a separate meter for irrigation?

The only case I have seen that might explain for it is because the counter rolled over and the water company just did a diff on the before and after. However, the bill came out to like $14,000 dollars and not $500.

Yep.. I just checked it right now. One says 20 and the other one has a higher number (~200000). They must have read someone else's meter. Good thing I didn't have an automatic credit card payment with them. I was about to put some of my bills including water onto my credit card and just pay off one lump sum per month.

Turn off the water main valve in the house and possibly the main shut off for the irrigation system as well, then check the water meter to see if it is spinning or not.

Meter spins indicates that you have a leak between the house and the water meter.

What is wrong with an automatic credit card payment? You still get several weeks to dispute the bill before the automatic payment comes through. If you don't get your bill fixed, you can always cancel the automatic payment just before it is paid. And by federal law, you get many more weeks after the payment comes through to continue to dispute it without a penny leaving your hands. You get MORE time and MORE laws backing you up with the autopayment than you would without it.

You do, of course, have to still look at the bills if you want to utilize that time.
