watching TV on a computer monitor (2001FP)

Is there any sort of DVD player with a coaxial input where it can act as sort of a VCR and I could hook it up using the S-Video output? I'm planning on getting a 2001FP and the resolution doesn't look too hot with my tv tuner card.. I'm wondering if it would be any better if I used like a DVD player with coaxial input and then outputted the signal to S-Video.. or would the monitor resolution still make it look like crap? Thanks.

No...you have to actually receive HDTV signals for it to work 😛 (And depending on what channels you want to receive, like premium channels, those usually aren't available to PC HDTV tuners anyway.)

Problem is I'm not looking at investing thousands getting HD signal to my house... so I'm just asking if there's a simple way to make the monitor look good with tv using a middle-man piece of equipment to convert the output.

HDTV tuners aren't expensive (there's a good one available for about $99), but again, they are often only good for OTA/network programming since cable companies usually encrypt all the other stuff.

As far as regular analog TV, there's really only so much you can do. 480i doesn't look pretty on a 1600x1200 screen (even with a hardware scaler like is in my tuner, it's just not that good).
 
I don't know if this adds anything to the thread, but my gf's parents have a cable box that outputs both composite and s-video. Both looked pretty sh!tty on their tv and it was only 36". I actually tried plugging the cable line directly into the tv and it ended up looking better than through the cable box. They need to use the cable box to get their premium channels though 🙁
 
hmm.. it seems that it's just the 480i standard sh!t... guess I'll just live with my TV tuner once I get the monitor.. oh well.

I had something like that before (a HRTV tuner made by viewsonic) and it worked pretty well. I keep forgetting I had one because I didn't use it for very long before I got my first tv.

I'm not really sure what it's doing internally, but it can take coax, s-video, composite, and VGA inputs and it outputs them all as VGA at varying resolutions. I guess it's de-interlacing the 480i signals and then scaling them to different resolutions. I have no idea how the output would compare to your tv tuner card. I imagine it wouldn't be much better if at all.
