Say you are watching a DVD which has a resolution of 1280x720, on a monitor running at a resolution of 1600x1200.

Would it be better to change your resolution to say 1280x960 (or 720) If you run the movie in full screen? If you don't, won't the image be scaled to fit and look worse than if it's shown at it's native resolution?

Edit:

Are DVD's 1280x720 or 720x480?

It completely depends on the type of monitor and your video output device.

Your NTSC Region 1 DVDs are 720x480... you should try a desktop resolution of 1280x960- that way you can exactly double the vertical resolution, leading to a cleaner upscaling.
