Watching DVDs on PC

Just gave away my Phillips DVD player. Instead of replacing it with another one, i am opting instead to get a DVD sriter for my pc and get more bang for the buck: a writer and a player (i could just use my pc's tv-out to watch on the much bigger TV)

It got me thinking though, is it safe to watch DVD movies on the burner on a regular basis? Like 4-5 times a week? I remember my cousins PS2 burning out because they watched on it regularly. Wouldn't want that to happen.

TIA!

the more use your dvd drive gets the sooner it will die.. but 4 or 5 movies a week isnt that bad.

just dont leave disks in the drive when its not in use (all that spining up and down is hard on them)

the thing with dvd drives is the fact that they are relatively inexpensive so even if they were to break in three years or so it wouldnt be too bad of a hit...of course by then the next form of media technology will be out...

therefore i usually just use everything as i want because technology is usually outgrown before it ever stops working

Modern drives are now so reliable and inexpensive that I really wouldn't worry about it.

I still have a CD drive that dates back to 1997 and it works fine.

Don't worry about it, DVD±RW/DVD-ROM drives are cheap these days...

As for video out, the quality will vary depending on the video card being used. You may see a reduction in quality going from a a dedicated set-top player to tv-out from your computer.

thanks for the input guys! Now all i have to do is make an s-video to rca output as my adapter is missing. I would gladly trade a slight reduction in quality of DVD for the chance to burn some. thanks again.
