Watching Crash Widscreen

Ive read up on the different aspect ratios that TVs come in as well as the ratios that movies are filmed in and I understand them fairly well.

I have a 50" vizio widescreen tv with at resolution of 1366x768.

That resolution calculates to about 1.85:1 ratio. The movie "Crash" (2005) was supposedly filmed at 1.85:1. Now this is what I get:

Crash Widescreen

Taking a look at the screen and doing a quick measurement with photoshop, it looks like the picture is much wider than 1.85. Looking at the image, I don't see how that movie can cover the entire screen without being stretched in some way.

I played with the tv settings and the dvd player settings and I can't get it to cover the whole screen without losing the details on the side and maybe some at the top and bottom.
(zoom, stretch modes)

Any ideas?

Exactly...the 1.85:1 ratio of the DVD INCLUDES the black bars. Seems like a shady practice to me, but not uncommon.

Well what's kinda weird is that my other DVDs filmed at 2.35:1 (Pirates of the Carribean) will have tiny black bars at the top and bottom (probably 1inch from top and bottom).

Another 1.85:1 film (Terminal) would also have small bars on top an bottom. this crash DVD claims to be 1.85:1 which supposedly would cover the entire screen but at most have small black bars (since 1366x768 is about 1.85:1).

I'm thinking it's a misprint on the DVD. Does anyone have the actual Crash DVD to confirm this?

Wow...didn't know they did that. So basically the movie was filmed at a much wider ratio and the compressed it to 1.85:1 by including the black bars in the actual film. Dang...shady.

note: A quick photoshop measurement gives me about 2.6:1.

Hmm.....on Amazon it does list it as 1.85:1 instead of 2.35:1

On the box itself it states 1.85:1, I'm 100% sure.

No. The black bars (letterboxing) are not on the DVD/film.

The DVD player itself adds them to "letterbox" the movie.

Heisenberg posted the DVD info. The movie is 2.35 and hence will have some black bars on a 16x9 display.

Sometimes the DVD is mislabeled and sometimes the studio mucks up the transfer. It happens.

it was filmed at 2.25:1. lions gate is known for f**king up aspect ratios. new special edition coming out next month on the 4th and on the back it still lists the movie at 1.85:1. i swear, lions gate and their games...
