if that's true, it'll take millions more years to find out, because the star is so friggin far away
Or... did they mean in terms of the light reaching us, in which case, it already happened.

kind of neat that a lot of things we see out there are a glimpse of the past.

It's the latter. They mean we could see it in a year or a million. Better hope for the latter, because it is one of the most massive stars known. When it goes, it may do so as a hypernova, which is hypothesized to be responsible for some gamma ray bursts.

Practically it means that most likely all life on earth no matter where is doomed.
