Watch out for fraudlent emails from supposedly from Ebay...

They're structured similarly to the fake paypal ones this is what the one sent to me said it was from eBay@reply3.ebay.com :

You have received this email because we have strong reason to believe that your eBay account had been recently compromised. In order to prevent any fraudulent activity from occurring we are required to open an investigation into this matter. To speed up this process, you are required to verify your eBay account by following the link below.


https://signin.ebay.com/saw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?SignIn&UsingSSL=1
(To complete the verification process you must fill in all the required fields)


Please Note: If your account informations are not updated within the next 72 hours, then we will assume this account is fraudulent and will be suspended. We apologize for this inconvenience, but the purpose of this verification is to ensure that your eBay account has not been fraudulently used and to combat fraud.


We appreciate your support and understanding, as we work together to keep eBay a safe place to trade.

Also, I got a fraud email supposedly from Ebay when I don't actually have an EBay account.. rather interesting 🙂 (Registered to a completely different email..)

In the forum, sure... but in emails it's possible to spoof links to appear very legitimately so they actually go to a different site when clicked...

Personally I write most links into the webbrowser window address bar manually, which could be a bit overly paranoid, but fairly safe.

I type in all links manually as well.

Here's something to think about..
there's already been one virus around that changed people's host files so that attempts to go to some common sites such as yahoo and google instead resulted in a trip to porn sites.

What if someone jacks your hosts file, and changes it so that when you attempt to go to ebay or paypal or citibank or any other site, it redirects you to the phishing site...????
I've posted this weakness before and am afraid of it...
Unless you are 100% certain that nothing has tampered with your hosts file, you can't be 100% certain you're going to ebay. I believe winsock could be exploited in a similar fashion. (new.net already messes it up so that you can use invalid extensions which it automatically reroutes to its own servers under real extensions that you never see)
