EmperorNero,

If you are using Win98, then the old MediaPlayer is still installed even if you upgraded to MediaPlayer7 (WindowsME has 6.4 installed, too, I think, even though it comes with MP7). To make sure that it is working, hold shift and right-click the .ASF file. Choose "Open with..." and use mplayer2. If everything seems OK, then remove the MediaPlayer7/.ASF file association and reassociate with MPlayer2 (MediaPlayer 6.4).

Anyone know of a quality way to convert these to .AVI or .MPG. I tried using a program called GraphEdit to convert to DiVX .AVI, but playback was very blocky and choppy.

There is no reason to convert these files to any other format. ".avi" is just a file extension, it's not a format per-se. They're already in Mpeg4 format, roughly the same codec Divx uses, although it's a bit modified.

I suppose you might want to burn it to a VCD or something, but mpeg4 is already much more compressed than mpeg1, and it's not going to look very good after the conversion.

Wag, there is every reason to convert this to another format if you want to (1) make a VCD or (2) watch on Linux or some other operating system that doesn't suppport .ASF format. I'm sure that there are many other reasons that someone would want to change file formats (and ".avi" is more than just a file extension, it is a format per-se). Granted, there will be some loss when converting from one format to another. My quick attempt to convert to DiVX .AVI resulted in a poor output. I have also converted to PICVideo MJPeG .AVI, and this resulted in a VERY NICE output video. However, the file was getting too big for .AVI format (.AVI standard maxes out at 2GB). I'm looking for alternatives. I just need to be looking in another forum than the Hot Deals forum, probably.

Guys, a little help please ...

We've downloaded 3 movies from FilmSpeed. They're now on our hard disk, but whenever we play them (with **either** ASF or Windows Media Player), they STOP after 20.5 minutes. Nothing we've tried gets beyond this point.

Any ideas? Thanks.

ribbet, maybe the file stream was corrupted. go to the official site:
http://asfrecorder.virtualave.net/

and d/l v1.1 - I read that the author updated the program so it would resume d/ls more efficiently.

also, has anyone finished d/ling the WHOLE movie? did everything go ok and how large is the file?

I bought this movie for $5.99 at Walmart. It is very entertaining. Go buy it, don't watch it on your computer

For those who are interested, the reason this ASF is prompting you to download a new CODEC is because it uses Microsoft's new Windows Media 8 format. It improves quality and lowers bitrate somewhat over v7, which I believe is the one that the DivX folks hacked and claimed as their own. Microsoft claims near-DVD quality at 750kbps which is a bit far-fetched, but IMHO it is still an improvement over v7 and DivX. I always have to scale down the output size of my DivX-encoded DVD rips just to get them close to 700MB, and this Fists of Fury file is running at 608x256 (which I think is slightly smaller than normal DVD resolution) at a file size of only 593MB. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

More info about Windows Media 8 format is here.

I've tried checking the properties of the streaming video for using ASFrecorder but that doesn't work. How do you get the address for downloading the 750 stream. Trying to get Chinese Connection. Thanks.
