Hello,

I just ordered a new EON 17 SLX this morning. The specs are pasted below.

One of my biggest concerns is about the new chips + video cards coming out this quarter.

I feel like I wasted almost 2.7k on a laptop that will not be cutting edge in a few months.

Please please let me know what you guys think. Do I wait for a couple more months or is this purchase good enough to last me a long time.

Laptops that weigh more than my cat... npt that one, the fat one... combined... don't particularly interest me. According to this short review, the power adapter weighs more (4 pounds) than my laptop.

I'm pretty sure that thing (13.2 pounds w/ AC adapter) weighs about as much as my desktop PC.

However:

Nothing is ever cutting edge after "a few months." Just enjoy your purchase and don't read any new review sites for a year.

Also, start pumping iron.

You have every right to be concerned as Intel Haswell is right around the corner and video cards are usually outdated within 1-2 months.

I feel like I wasted almost 2.7k on a laptop that will not be cutting edge in a few months.

In my honest opinion you did waste $2,700 on a laptop that will be outdated in a few months.

If you're looking for most bang for your buck you can't beat the Dell Outlet which currently has 25% off XPS laptops.

After a quick search here's what I found for significantly less, over half off!

$1,409.00 - 25% coupon ($352.25 savings) = $1,056.75 with free ground shipping.

Processor Processor: Intel Core 3rd Generation i7-3612QM Processor (6MB cache, up to 3.1 GHz)
Operating System Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
Base Dell Outlet XPS 15 Laptop
Hard Disk Drive 1 TB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Memory 16.0GB, DDR3-1600MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS
Media Bay 8X Blu-Ray BD Combo (Blu-ray ROM + DVD+/- RW)
Video NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M with 2GB GDDR5
System Color Silver Anodized Aluminium
Laptop Screen 15.6 Inch FHD 1080p Truelife WLED Display and Skype-Certified HD Webcam Silver Anodized Aluminum
Laptop Battery 9 Cell Battery
Network Interface Card Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 and Bluetooth 3.0
Web Camera 1.0 MP HD Camera with MIC
Keyboard English Keyboard
Hardware Upgrade 125V Power Cord
90W AC Adapter
Badge
Software Upgrade Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit Service Pack 1
Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Operating System DVD
Office Software Microsoft Office Starter – reduced functionality Word & Excel w/ads & no PowerPoint or Outlook

Yes the specs aren't quite as good as yours but it's almost 1/3 the cost and more bang for your buck. I should also note it's 15" vs 17" which is more portable and comes with Windows 7.

Since Dell refreshes their inventory 24/7, if you're patient you can probably find a better laptop for less.

At that price, a desktop is assured to be a better buy unless you really need the smaller form factor.

If you REALLY want a powerful laptop, look at Sager. They will do similar powered laptops for hundreds less.

Here is a laptop that when configured right will beat that one or come close, for easily 300-500 less.

Yup, configure it with 675MX in SLI and 240GB SSD, and bluray drive for 400 less than the OP.

Plus Sager is an established and reputable brand, I've never heard of "Eon" until I read the OP.

I hope it isn't too late for them to cancel or return their order.

I'd rather buy this Sony 55" HDTV for $2k + $700 for a Dell Outlet laptop = $2,700.

It doesn't have 802.11ac. You just spent $2700 on a laptop that isn't even cutting edge as of right now D:

Do you need cutting edge? or do you need something that will meet your requirements? (you did have requirements in mind, right?) I typically upgrade my computer when i have some watershed game I want to play that renders mine obsolete. Otherwise, you can chase specs for the sake of having the best, or you can enjoy your computer.

This feels like troll bait. We can all talk about what we'd do with $2700 (70" screen?), but if you're happy with what you bought, then don't worry about buying something better.

If you're still in some return window and want to asses options, then that's another story...

At least you're not the guy who spent $3200 on an oversized, stuffed banana at a carnival.

I figured it must have been, but you can't really make a decent comparison, ITX essentially is almost a laptop in desktop format.

ITX systems don't have to make the sorts of compromises or use laptop parts the way they used to or laptops still do.

I realize this, however, they are similar in many aspects and ITX system would be the common relative to a real desktop and a laptop.

Point is, most people aren't running ITX and talking about how it's almost compared to his desktop then not telling anyone it's ITX is a bit misleading. Had he said, it weighs about as much as my ITX build, then it would have been less misleading.

Link to build specs are in my sig. It's not misleading if you don't do the research. :p

Seriously though; the two things an ITX build has over (any) laptop are 1) Desktop CPU support, 2) Desktop GPU support, and 3) Cost (mostly as a result of 1 & 2.). Obviously, they're bulkier and harder to move around, even if they don't weigh all that much more.

But I've got a slimline DVD-RW and 2.5" HDDs, so if you want to poke fun at my rig for using laptop parts, go right ahead. :D
