My house is sealed pretty tight and the fireplace has glass doors why have I found 4 wasps/hornets in my house over the last 4 days? They are always in the same area. Am I getting a nest somewhere I don't know about

(windows and doors have been closed)

Probably a nest you don't know about. Look around the outside of the house around the area you've been finding them inside; check for small holes that might indicate a nest in the side of the house. They might nest under the eaves of a roof as well. But if it's all in one area, the chances are very high the nest is in that area, accessible from the outside; you'll need to identify it, and you may need to call in specialists to deal with it.

This. And be careful when looking around - don't put your hands anywhere that you can't see above you. I found out the hard way and got stung for my carelessness when I grabbed a gutter above where I was standing :p

Thanks guys, I hope they are not in the attic, getting over there would be real tough with the cellulose insulation

Flowers can pollinate themselves, or find a new champion. WTB genocide against flying stingy thingies.

I found a yellow jacket wasp in my apartment last week. I don't know how it got in. I trapped it, showed to my students and then released it.

Honeybees: Not a problem. Non-aggressive, in my experience. I never saw a nest though. They were always just in the dandelions and clovers in the yard at my parents' house.
Bumblebees: Also not in a stinging mood when foraging, but they were jerks about it, buzzing right all in your face, posturing.

Hornets and wasps: Assholes that will sting because they're bored. Hornets will also call in some friends and have a venom injection party. Then they get all rowdy and start fighting over access to the most tender of the fleshy stinging grounds.

We used to have property in the family on the edge of the Hoosier National Forest where we'd get together every Labor Day weekend and camp out.

One of my Uncles had a tree stump near the fire as a tabletop, he was chilling drinking beer with a flyswatter and putting them on the tree stump when he got one. Every now and then a hornet would fly in like coming into an aircraft carrier and bite a flies head off and fly off with it, heh.

Of course another Uncle was allergic to bee stings and some of us would go down the burn out any yellow jackets nests in the ground the weekend before.

Definitely wouldn't want the little guys in the house.

Take a picture. I've found multiple dead / dying flies that look like hornets.

Hornets are pretty distinctive, especially live angry ones.

I can't think of many armoured, yellow and black inch long, angry bastard flies that I'd mistake one for.

Carpathian War Fly

I've no idea what one of those is or if it even exists but its got the most awesome, buttkicking name so it gets a defacto entry into the most hardcore animal category.

Hey, no one can prove that it doesnt exist. :whiste:

The flies I'm talking about even behave aggressively; mimicking an agitated hornet and trying to sound like one. I guess the behavior deters some higher-order creatures that might mess with it. The only way to tell it's a fly: Look at the head and antennae when it lands.

Has anyone suggested arson yet?

I've been attacked by nests of bumblebees before, twice. Yes, I appreciate how retarded that sounds, but they weren't the usual fat blobby adorable ones. They looked more like this
flat,550x550,075,f.jpg

and they fuckin hurt. I wouldn't screw around with wasps in the house, I'd find and sterilize their home and entry point, or I'd call an exterminator.

The "fat blobby adorable" ones that people incorrectly call "bumblebees" are actually carpenter bees.
