Wasn't there supposed to be a Fry's Electronics in the Chicago area?

Hi,

I kept hearing about Fry's Electronic stores building a store in the western suburbs of Chicago this past spring, but I havne't heard anything about it since. I looked on Fry's site recently and they still only show locations in California and Texas. Does anyone have any updated information on this?

TIA,

Sal

I remember a post about that too like they had bought some old best buy or some retail building and they were going to remodel it.

If I remember correctly they were supposed to be located at Oakbrook near the CompUSA/Circuit City stores. Not really sure what's happening.

There is an old compusa building that crapusa left and relocated 3 more miles down butterfield about 1/2 mile from circuit city. Last time I've driven by the old compusa building there was nothing in it.

(economy is in the crapper around here, 2 movie theaters went under, wards went under, service merchandise went under, petland went under)

/edit adding to the bad economy part (Venture awhile ago went under, Crown books went under but another store Books A Million took its place, Dominicks is not doing to good with the union strike deals, Sears Homelife went under) I will add to this list as I start to remember

You of course cannot forget about K-mart

<-- waves hello from clarendon hills.

BTW, in my opinion compusa is in an even worse location than they were before. sure, they are near best buy but you can only see their sign going west, and you can only acess it by getting off butterfield and taking that mall access road...terriblly inconvienent. not like the previous location was any better...but i wont be shopping there anymore with microcenter closer.

Yea it is impossible to get to compusa. They started to build another entrance for the p-lot which is closer to compusa. Hopeful they will finish it sometime and make it easier to get in.

Archived thread .......FRY's electronics is comming to Downers Grove, IL

Location in map. Zoom in for more detail.

Future Location:
Finley Rd between Ogden Ave and Butterfield Rd, along I-355. (Basically where I-355 and I-88 intersect)

They will be taking over the "AutoNation" Property on the west side of Finley Rd (just East of I-355, you can see it from the highway)

Anyone live nearby and take a look on what's happening??

Woa I've just noticed something I think I've actually met Evadman before. From his other post on the thread from March he said he worked at the Home Depot on Butterfield... the same one I shop at constantly.

/edit
/me starts to sing its a small world after all

Just a little info...

wards went under

This was national. They were killed by the same thing that's hurting Sears.

service merchandise went under

This wasn't national, but they did close a sh!tload of stores all over. They just can't compete.

petland went under

This wasn't national, but they are franchises.

Venture awhile ago went under

All thier stores closed.

Sears Homelife went under

Sears shut this entire operation down, it was national. Pity too, I liked the one in Northridge, CA near my Mom's house. Now there is only Levitz in the north valley. Anyone who knows about Levitiz knows they sell the cheapest crap made of cardboard and bubble gum. :disgust:

So anywho, most of the closings in your neighborhood were national.

Venture was bought out by Kmart who decided to basicallt close all the stores to try and increase sales at Kmart stores. That turned out well.

Thanks for providing the corrections. I was about to do the same. Certainly, all of the retailers mentioned all had "issues" and are no longer present in any market of the U.S. Even if the economy was doing great, these stores would have still tanked. Many of those stores used to be present in my market. On their best day, they were lucky to have 10 cars in the parking lot.

Fry's is just like Comp USA except a little less organized. You can always do better shopping on the net.

Don't know about your CompUSA and Fry's but the CompUSA near my house sells KT266 mobos for $200 bucks and regular flat ATA/66 cable for $30 bucks while the Fry's has great prices comparable to Newegg and a no-questions-asked-no-RMA-needed return policy. I love 'em.
Anyway, they were supposed to put in another one here in Portland, in the old Builders Square at Hayden Meadows near Delta Park, but I heard they put that on hold as well because of the economy.

you are forgetting the multitudes of home theater stuff that they also sell - and the home appliances (not to mention the real electronic stuff - resistors, leds, multimeters, power supplies, etc)

Not to mention the incompetent sales staff, the returns Fry's puts back on the shelf and the Door Nazi's

there was supposed to be one in downer's grove and one in palatine I think. I had heard that Fry's expansion plans are delayed since the economy is so bad right now.

The palatine one was (is?) going where the old builder's square was (see link)

Yes! That's where it was supposed to go. That link is actually a picture of my work, lol. Whole Foods Market. I hope they get their act together and put the Fry's up so I actually have somewhere to go on my breaks 🙂

If anybody in the area goes to Fry's if they get it in over the summer, stop by Whole Foods and ask for Brian on the Front End. I can guarantee you I'll most likely be there 5/7 days a week if it's past 3 o'clock 😀
