I let my cousin live at my place absolutely free (no rent), and he doesn't have to pay for utils (power, warshin' machine, hot water, cable, internet...all provided by me). Poor college kid. He can focus on his studies and not bother having to juggle a job and school.

He thinks its okay, despite repeatedly telling him not, to saturate the pipe with dozens of torrents at a time. I wander into his room to see them all going. He is what you call a little "warez kiddie".

Finally I popped. I couldn't even get any HTTP traffic through. So he is now capped at 4KBps down and up. Default torrent ports (6881-6889) are blocked for him.

I'm a nice guy but when you are downloading entire TV series rips, 24/7 on a line you don't pay sh!t for--you can go fly a kite!

Abuse it and lose it. Sounds fair to me.

Lay the smack down on him until he can learn to use it properly. He should just be happy you didn't flip out and scratch his face.

I'm not saying how you should handle it, but if it were me I wouldn't block the ports but I would cap his usage just not so low. I'd cap it to about 1/4 of my max capacity maybe 1/8 if I needed more for myself temporarily.

Yes. You could have made him pay rent, if you wanted to, along with utilities (including the cost of a separate Internet connection).

EDIT: Blocking the default ports is pointless if you are trying to stop his BT usage (which you did by capping the bandwidth), unless he's a total noob at software.

I have a similar problem at my place. I have two roommates, one is my brother, who constantly download TV shows, movies, music, games, etc. Our connection crawls. We share the cost, but I told my brother if he wants to eat the connection he can do it when I'm not around, i.e. at night.

My other roommate just got into downloading TV shows, leaving five or six going at once. I told him do it at night, when no one is actively using the net. He ignored me.

I just walk into his room and cancel all the downloads.

Screw that. I would hand him the bill for the internet and tell him that if you aren't getting to use it to it's fullest he can either pay for it or not have internet at all. 99.999% of colleges allow their students to access the internet for free from school, so his choice is to not ever download warez and illegal crap again, or not have internet at all.

Next you know, you will get busted for piracy and you'll be up poo creek.

Luckily he is a total noob :p

In fact, I set him up with torrent and showed him how to use it. I said it was good in MODERATION... like if he wanted to grab a file once in awhile. I told him that I only run larger ones at night (which was truthful) out of consideration for everyone.

He just totally blew it out of the water. Every single day he would grab something just for the sake of having it. Judging from what I saw on his screen, 99% of it was copyright material too. He began buying spindles of blank CDs just to dump the stuff off his drives :|

If he can afford the spindles, then he can afford his own connection.

Anyways, I think you did the right thing. A little harsh, but hey, teaches him a lesson.
