the racist form of blackface popular in vaudeville wasn't simply about painting one's face black, but nearly 90% of the time, it was part of a caricature of the Black person--the "Sambo" character, which is incredibly racist. You need the fat, exposed lips, the "yessuh!" dialogue, the portrayal of abject poverty and simple, humble ignorance, etc...
without evoking the sambo caricature, I don't think painting one's face black to become a black character is racist.
see: Tropic Thunder.
I think its racist regardless, but that is the joke. They have an ignorant character do it and offend the other characters. They're making fun of how blatantly racist it is. In the Always Sunny episode the characters even directly discuss the racism.
are you referring to Tropic Thunder? I seem to remember that, now. My memory of that flick is foggy, as I was distracted by how bad it was. :\
You are literally the only person I've ever heard call that movie bad. Everyone I know who saw it loved it. I think it's hilarious.
Add another person to the list. Tropic Thunder was horrible, but what movie with Ben Stiller isn't?

never even heard of it
Just so I get this straight, the OP is singling THAT episode of Always Sunny out as being "un-PC"? The entire freaking show's premise is to be un-PC.
Also I am VERY dismayed nobody has linked or mentioned anything about 1986's smash hit Soul Man.
