Washroom crisis averted!

Alright, so I'm visiting my sister and brother-in-law for a couple of weeks. They went to bed a few hours ago and I'm sitting watching the Olympics / browsing the internet in the living room. So anyways, I realize that I REALLY need to go to the washroom. Now there are two washrooms in the apartment. One in the hallway nearby, and one in the master bedroom that I've never used. So I get on over to the washroom, and the door's locked and I'm sure it was me who pulled it shut last. SHIT. Options:

1) Just go try to use the master bedroom washroom.
2) Wake them up and ask for whatever I need to unlock the washroom door.
3) Unlock it myself.

Now the master bedroom door is closed, and it's really late, so there's no way I'm going to walk in there now. I'll just unlock the washroom myself. On the inside of the door, the lock is one of those that you turn 90 degrees clockwise to a vertical position to lock the door, and then turn it back to open. On the outside, it's just a circular hole a few millimeters in width. Not one of those that you can just slide the back end of a spoon and turn to open.

So a quick Google search tells me that it's still simple to open. Okay, I have to go to the washroom SOON. I just need to insert a screwdriver into that little hole to open it. But I have no idea what the hell the inside looks like. So I go find my luggage and rummage through it looking for my keychain because my keychain has a little LED on it. I find it and shine it into the hole. It's about 1.5" deep and at the very end of the round barrel is a vertical slit. So I need to insert a screwdriver into that slit and then just turn it.

Thing is, I have no idea where anything is in their apartment. I go through all the desks and cabinets in the kitchen and finally find some tools. Gotta hurry! I see these small screwdrivers that just seem perfect. BUT, they're not long enough. The smallest ones don't go all the way and the big ones won't fit in the hole. I really can't last much longer X_X. I decide to cut up a strong piece of paper/plastic and try that. So I find some thick paper, cut it up and push it in. I can tell it fits into the little vertical slit, but it's too weak and won't turn the lock. NOOOO. Okay, so I keep looking.

I find one of those plastic packages that used to have a thermometer in it. You know those really hard to open plastic packages that you spend like 10 minutes opening and end up cutting your finger? Yeah, one of those. I cut it up, push it in. Too weak. I estimate I have like no more than 10 mins left. I find a pen nearby, take out the ink cartridge. I cut up the hard plastic from the package again and insert it into the back end of the pen cartridge and try again. Still no luck. HOLY SHIT. I am SO close to losing it. As a last resort, I take the pen cartridge and put about a half inch of the back under a chair and push down hard to flatten it. This better work. I push it into the hole and it fits well into the slit. I start to turn it and it starts to bend. This might not work either. I turn the pen harder, and it clicks! WOOOOOT! Doorknob turns, and voila: WASHROOM. FINALLY. Sweet sweet relief.

I seriously wouldn't have lasted another 5 minutes. No kidding. Even now my bladder and surrounding insides kinda ache. Anyone have any similar stories?

Cliffs:

- I am staying at relatives house.
- Need to go to washroom but door is locked. Really late, cannot wake up relatives.
- Spend quite some time unlocking the washroom door, finally open it with a pen.
- Unbelievably close to losing it lol.

For weeks on end, I would have to rush into work, find an empty stall, and unload quite a bit. It was a photo finish every time. I would barely make it.
One day, I got caught in a sig alert traffic congestion. The freeway stopped for a long time. It was to the point where everyone shut off their engines.
I had to go.
I noticed that if I could get out of the car, walk over a hill, I would be out of site. I grabbed some kleenex to save the undies and went for a stroll.
I went over the hill to notice that there was some houses there. Their backyards faced the hill I went over. But their fence line was still many yards away from where I was. I noticed there was nobody in view. No one was in their backyard, and nothing in the windows watching.
I do my business, wipe and pull up pants.
Then I heard a loud *HONK*. I just then realized that a couple of semi trucks had a full view.

what the fuck is a washroom?

Usually the term washroom is used to denote a public, commercial, or industrial personal hygiene facility designed for high throughput, whereas a similar term "bathroom" is used to denote a smaller, often residential facility for lesser throughput (i.e., often for only one person at a time to use). The word originated in the United States and is currently the preferred term in Canada; in American English, "bathroom" or "restroom" are now more common (except in Chicago, where "washroom" is still standard). In Britain, Australia, Hong Kong (as toilets) and New Zealand, the terms in use are "public toilets" and (more informally) "public loos". In the rest of the world (usually Africa, Middle East, and Southeast Asia) the term "Comfort room" is used. Furthermore many European washroom doors are simply marked "WC", for water closet, which may be confusing for non-Europeans. One reason some Americans prefer "restroom" over "bathroom" is that restrooms do not have bathtubs. The word "washroom" is also sometimes used in the United States to denote a "laundry room" or utility room.

A washroom, public toilet, public convenience, comfort room, toilet room, bathroom, water closet or restroom, is a facility provided to allow use of a toilet by members of the public, or by patrons or customers. This is in contrast to a private usually residential toilet room, which may be a standalone water closet, or part of a bathroom. At a minimum, a washroom can be a single unit featuring a toilet and hand basin for hand washing. Washrooms can also be larger facilities, which may also include bathing facilities or showers, changing rooms and baby facilities.

So his sister has a public toilet in her apartment? Weird.

What you have to actually put something in there and turn it? All the "Washroom" locks that I have ever seen were just the push in kind.

Our locks came with little push tools to unlock them, we strategically placed them throughout the house.

A credit card or something of that nature and 1 min tops would have any non-deadbolt open.

both options don't sound too palatable.

most bathroom locks are easy to fix. If it was the kind you can lock then pull shut from the outside, there is usually a small hole in the handle that you can unlock by shoving something into it, like the ink tube from inside a pen, a strong toothpick, anything skinny enough to fit.

I second the sink idea.

Or drop kicking the door.

Much easier than all this hastle...
