Going next Wednesday with the 9 year old. Suggestions? Museum of natural history and air & space are on the agenda. Evening capitol tour, too.

This will be my 2nd 3 weekdays off in 5 years. Woot, self employed.

Thought there was a thread but searched to no avail.

Thanks.

Really just the museums. There's probably other things to do, but you can easily spend the day museum viewing.

Check to see if you can get into the White House. Usually you have to sign up well in advance so not sure if a week is enough time.

You can also go into the treasury department and see how money is made. Its also on the same road as some museums.

Oh and if you go to the Washington monument, go early as it seems to get very busy as the day goes on. The Obama monument is also busy but due to its size gets more people in.

Also national archives and that one building that is supposed to be really architecturally pleasing. Can't remember what it's called. I think there's some kind of garden at the place too.

VN memorial is fine for a youngin. I personally got emotional, and others will too, but theres nothing gory or too harsh there. For me it was the size of the book of the dead, and the sheer scale of the human toll that did it. I would say the Washington Monument, but you need passes in advance. I would also say the Lincoln memorial - its hard to get there with a car, and without its a very long walk.

Things look a lot closer than they are and walking around is very tiring.

The National Zoo is great, though it is a bit of a walk from the metro station. How do you plan on getting around? All-day Metro pass is what we do when we go..it's like 7 or 8 bucks(i think) and makes things much easier.

if you want something super fun to do at night, go to Dave & Buster's in rockville, md, just outside D.C.

we moved from the area 5 years ago, and my now 10 yr old daughter still talks about D&B's and misses it.

Pretty sure the metro is the plan. Wife is the experienced one up there but she has to put some hours in at the congressman's office. The kid has been there twice, too (me zero). We're staying at a hotel near the Pentagon.

If you have the time (and interest), I'd highly recommend the National Aquarium in Baltimore. I love that place! I could go there every month if it was cheaper

<------------DC native (now living in NH)

How many days will you be in town? That will help me narrow things down.

Edit: I know you said "next wednesday" but wasn't sure if you meant that you are only in town that one day.

heh i live literally like 1/4 mile from there.

and there is a metro station at the national zoo on the red line, but you do have to walk like a quarter mile or maybe a tad more up a hill to get to the entrance. i went there last summer and it was a lot smaller than i had remembered.

Just go to the next stop on the red line and it's a short walk downhill instead :D

if you're the outdoors type. Rent a bike in Georgetown and ride up the c&o canal trail to Great Falls park. Great way to spend a day..
