So I am sad to admit I am 27 years old and for the most part have always washed every item of my clothing in Cold.

When should I use warm and hot?

Do sheets/bedding require a different setting?

What are the temps for?

whites = hot

the rest = warm or cold.

most of the time i dont even sort the clothes and just wash everything in warm water. i hate paying extra to run 2 or 3 machines.

Considering washing clothes in hot water is equivalent to leaving the fridge open all day long, I never use hot. Since warm and cold are equally effective in washing clothes, I never use the warm setting. Always cool/cold for me.

I use hot with linens and undies. Cold for everything else. And I hang dry shirts always.

I sort lights/darks, but I wash everything on cold. No need to piss away energy by using warm or hot settings. If there are stains or dirt, pre-treat them right away.

Hot water will get things a little cleaner and allow you to use less detergent. However, it will also make colors run more, which is why it's typically reserved for whites.

Cold water is least likely to make colors run, but it's also the most difficult to use to get things clean. If you do not separate your wash into colors, you'll want to use cold though.

Warm is a compromise between hot and cold and cleans better than cold, but doesn't make colors run as much as hot. It's the typical setting for most clothing if you separate it into colors.

That's how my parents taught me to do laundry.

You know, the washing machine has quickly become a machine that is really taken for granted. But that thing is a godsend compared to the old way. My grandmother had to use one of those damn wringers, or rather, her kids did because she had 9 of them and who wouldn't put them to work. Those fucking things will break your fingers if you're not careful, and if you really screw it up they'll take some fingers off! Not to mention it was a whole lot of work.

We're so spoiled now. I buy a $300 washing machine and then just dump a basket of clothes in it and turn a couple knobs. If I'm paying attention I even remember to put soap in.
