Louis Gossett Jr.

Dude won an Oscar for Officer and a Gentleman. Won a couple of Golden Globes and an Emmy...

Then did a bunch of Iron Eagle sequels and pretty much disappeared. I liked him in Diggstown, Toy Soldiers and Enemy Mine but man... other than that, talk about down in flames.

I fucking LOVE that movie, don't know why, but it's one of my favs.

Tom Hanks.

He started well, in the 80's, and by the 90's he was the guy.

Remember him helplessly walking out into the cold in Philadelphia, or transforming himself in castaway (whether you loved it or hated it), or those shattering scenes in Saving Private Ryan?

That guy would be ashamed of the hack that phones in roles nowadays.

What was more memorable in "The DaVinci Code" - his acting or his hair?

Definitely not washed up. He's done more kids role stuff though of late, Woody from Toy Story trilogy, the most successful animated franchise in history? He plays the role with a LOT of skill honestly, even if it is just the voice there.

His adult film roles have definitely been less, but I think that's by his choice. He decided to give directing a try and made Larry Crowne (haven't seen yet), but Charlie Wilson's War wasn't that long ago, and that was pretty good. His last great role imho was Hanratty in 'Catch me if you Can', but that was '02.

LOL : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=271gItFZFEw

Point is, he's still a megastar, and is not going to fade into obscurity by any means.

But he's never really done anything that's been good. I think you should have to have done several good films before you can be named. So he is going from being washed up to more washed up?

Eternal Sunshine at the very least was an excellent movie. Plus the Truman Show and Cable Guy were pretty decent. I like Carrey, after Ace Ventura/Dumb and Dumber he just got severely typecast.

And Lindsay Lohan. She was seriously everywhere after Mean Girls / Freaky Friday and now she's a nobody.

tom hanks washed-up?

the fuck?

I believe he spends the majority of his time in the producer's role, these days. But whenever he does another role, it's never bad or unnoticed.

If anything, I think he should go back to comedy. He's a brilliant comedic actor, which is far more difficult than they typical dramatic roles that so many are known for.

same with seinfeld, he still does random standup and hes still funny, he made billions and just does whatever now. not really washed up

and I believe Jason Alexander is mostly Broadway--which was his thing before Seinfeld.

A lot of people simply don't realize what the life of an actor is--sometimes you don't see someone for so long simply because they are tired of the film biz and maybe just want to go back to the stage for some time, or their life has changed and they are taking a break and not actively seeking large, exposed roles. Many will do small roles in tiny independent flicks that no one every sees, just to pay the bills.

Marisa Tomei
I don't remember her doing nude scenes until more recent, too bad back in the day she was hottie.

Uh, dude, she still IS a hotty! Just more into the "cougar" age bracket. For us older guys, we're damn grateful to see she's released her standards a little bit, and is willing to do a semi-nude role every so often!

As far as washed up goes, I'd have to nominate Tom Cruise. For quite a while now. Although I thought he was great in Tropic Thunder! Maybe if Tom would stop trying to be all badass, and start doing more comedic roles, I'd like his work.

was havoc before or after The Devil wears Prada? the prada movie was the first time i remember hearing about her. TBH i dont think ive ever heard of havoc
Havoc was before.

Princess Diaries its sequel an Ella Enchanted were the only known roles she landed pre-Havok. There is no doubt that hollywood knew who she was, but she couldn't land any decent roles. She does claim that she didn't get topless to make a statement, but because it fit within the movie.

Following Havoc she was in Brokeback Mountain and the rest is history.

Women in hollywood have a long history of taking their tops off to get noticed. Some times it works, Anne + Alyssa Milano and some times it doesn't Mischa Barton + Elizabeth Berkley.

For most of them though they grow older and fall out of the demographic that hollywood wants.

For women much past 30 and you are done. Meg Ryan is the perfect example. Huge star up until 2000 and then she got to old for the romance films and got stuck with crappy roles.

Men can last a little longer if they are a big headlining box office star, but otherwise they tend to disappear as well.

Hollywood is a pretty nasty place when it comes to aging. All the 'hot' stars are in their 20s and five years from now we will be wondering what happened to Emma Store or Scarlett Johansson.

yeah, i was going to mention that about women. it's not so much that they are washed-up--it's that Hollywood simply "will not let them work" anymore.

I think a lot of it has to do with the types of roles that are actually available, and the notion that while men of various ages can play all types of aged-roles, those instances are more limited to women; and for the older women, the roles are very, very limited.

Rosanna Arquet did a documentary about this a few years back, focusing on the supposed disappearance of Debra Winger.

People who go to the movies are in their teens and 20s and don't want to see 'old' or ulgy people on screen. So all the box office stars are young and pretty.

If you are older you can make it, but only if you are a really good actor or if you are famous or well known enough to play the parent to the new 'hot' kid on the block.

lots of people of all ages go to the movies. more go in their teens and twenties now simply because Hollywood decided years ago that if they cater to them, that is the audience that is likely to return to see the same shitty movie again and again, thus making more profit.

so, they start pumping out dog shit vapid films to cater to young idiots, and the entire film audience changes over 2 or so decades. The traditional audiences gave up on Hollywood for the most part because this is what now floods the theaters, and now we have Michael Bay and his ilk shitting all over the screen all summer long, and much less people like Scorsese or Altman.

Older people very much do go to the theater, and absolutely would go (the reality is that they have more money to burn, and the type of movies they prefer are far cheaper to produce than the shit that gets out there today) if it weren't littered with mouth-breathing teenagers and college-aged males.

yeah, I went there .:awe:
