I've been wondering this for a while...and since I wasn't a member during this occurance.
During the time when the Northwood P4s outperformed Athlon XPs, wasthere the same kind of idiocy going on around here?

Just wondeing...

Did Northwood outperform Athlon XPs?

If I recalled correctly not a single occurrence on overall performance P4 won over Athlon
No offence

AnnihilatorX, are you familiar with the words, "multitasking" or "video encoding?"

Thx!

yea, northwood owned athlon xp's, but the athlon's pricing made up for it by far.

This link shows an article in which Northwood cleraly outperforms Athlon XP.
But anyway...You haven't been around long enough to know about trolling of back then which is the main point.

urgh...I need better proofreading skills.

well, we will always be in a never ending cycle of trolling and flaming due to people and their stubborn personalities and inability to agree.

Just like today really.
If you want top multicore performance, you have to pay for it (from AMD) if you want a cheaper option, Intel is there.
Back then, Intel was best for pretty much everything (even games vs the Athlon XP) but obviously you had to pay the premium.

There were far more intel supporters when it was AXP vs. Northwood.

Basically there were people for value (AXP) and people for performance at a bit of a price premium (Northwood)

Since the A64 came along, several previous Intel supporters switched over to AMD (Duvie is the most prominent in my mind).

But yes, people here are generally buying things with price and performance in mind. This forum generally stresses price more than most CPU forums I've seen on the internet. I think the members of the forums here do a pretty good job of chewing through the hype and getting into some of the best ways to compare real-world performance. Regardless of what review sites say (including AT itself) the user community here will often do their oen benchmarking to get to the real meat of performance comparisons.

Northwood 'C' was great chip.

I kept mine for two years and it overclocked sweet.

But, I base my buying decisions on what's best in the market when I come to upgrade, and this time round that was AMD64.

I think people who blindly buy one brand over another out of loyalty are just stupid.

There has always been people that support either Intel or AMD no matter who "wins".

I don't recall it being as bad as it is now (especially since Toms posted their stress test article).

As for people that recommended AMD durring the time when "Northwood P4s outperformed Athlon XPs" most (emphasis on most) of those people saw redeaming qualities in the XP line like price/performance, better lagacy support, and general usage.

Personally I try my best to be impartial and durring that time I recommend both, and I still would if I thought one fit the persons needs better than the other.

Well yeah that's right.
I do recommend P4 to people when they specified that they do encoding.

Encoding is one area, but I think Intel might still have an advantage in budget multitasking with their single core HT line and possibilly with their inexpensive duel processor line (I'd have to look into pricing a bit more to be sure).

Yeah, I relly like the Intel platform. I was really hoping they could pull something off. But, to my disappointment, they haven't. I'm waiting for a more mid-ranged price on a Dual Core AMD or Intel. Whichever is the better value at the time.

Not really just like today. The margins for the P4 were small like 2-10% depending on test and lost in lots of testing like POV-RAY and other heavy old school FPU work. And it was half price!!! You could buy a mobile XP or 2500+ for $80!!! P4's were $180.

Today, the X2 averages out 30% faster than the 820, that's huge in CPU terms. Yesit's more money but you get A LOT more for that money.

Yes only it was reversed when Intel had the best cpu's. Some people take name branding a little too serious. Im guessing this will always happen. Some just like to stir up the bees nest.

Actually, there has always been a group of "trolls" running around, for one "camp" or the other. That hasn't changed in the 4+ years I've been here.

What has changed is that the "trolls" seem to be more vicious now; at least a few years back we could have a DEBATE and DISCUSSION without hurtling insults and profanities at each other. Now we've got members' threatening to show up at other members' doors and all that kind of childish crap.

As well (and not coincidentally) many of the greats have either left this board or no longer post anything. I'm not going to name any names but those who have been here as long as me (or longer) will know the people I'm referring to.

Northwoods with 800mhz FSB stomped the Athlon XP's..

Just not in the value area..
