Remember that guy from Laos who killed the hunters? Well, now he's getting multiple life terms. I have a weird gut feeling that he was pushed into that situation because of his nationality, as well, as the possible red-neckiness in that area. I believed his initial story, but I think the 'necks did much to set it off.

I agree. He should have to take no responsibility for his actions.

Ummm, no, the evidence shows that he shot people in the back as they ran, and the hunters got off a grand total of one errant shot in defense, probably as the guy dropped. "Getting Pushed" is not a plausible excuse for slaughtering scores of people, IMO. Based on the evidence, he should spend the rest of his life in prison.

According to trial testimony, Vang said he got lost, went into a tree stand on the private land and was asked by another hunter, Terry Willers, to leave. Vang said he apologized and started walking away.

Then what happened, really? Like I said, I believed his initial story.

lilliputian? Damn, now thats a little word. ;) (psst, I had to go look it up) Glad I did that before I accused Red of using big words he did not understand! :Q

BTW, I don't dispute the fact that he committed the actions that have sent him to prison for the next several lifes. What I am wondering, is , what initially was said or done to him to set him off like that? See what I'm wondering?

I have this picture of good ol boys, who just don't take kindly to his being around to begin with.

Regardless of whether his story about getting lost (he was in a fvcking tree stand waiting for a deer to happen along for chrissakes) was true or not, he got his just reward.

Even if they did taunt him with racial slurs, which there is no evidence they did, his ations demand he go to prison. We can't have people out there shooting others because they got offended.

While I can believe the racist part pretty easily, there is still the fact that he killed six people. It sucks that there are still bigots in the United States, but that doesn't give you the right to shoot them.

I don't condone murder, which is what he did. I just wondered...tried to put myself, in my mind, into that environment. I'm just trying to picture it all from the beginning.

Yeah, I tried to examine the facts with some empathy as well, but he lost me when he shot people in the back. That just shows he was on a murderous rampage. He left the other 2 for dead as well. Terrible case.

The judge at his sentencing refered to Vang as a ticking time bomb, suggesting he would have gone off eventually. Racial taunting probably set him off. There was also some testimony (by Vang) about dreams of "an evil shaman" telling him to kill.

Here's the quote from the judge:

Yackel described Vang as a "time bomb ready to go off" at the slightest provocation.

"These crimes are not isolated acts, but a pattern of anti-social conduct," the judge said.

So to paraphrase from your title...Yes, this guy was that deranged, and Yes, some rednecks sealed his fate.

There certainly shouldn't be people out there shooting people just because they are offended and we certainly shouldn't tolerate it. We as a society can't tolerate that. But know what? There are people out there who will shoot you because they are offended. And little does it matter to those who are dead whether or not the shooter got punished. If everybody would just keep that in mind before going around offending people, the world would be a lot less offensive.

It's pretty insulting to automatically classify these crime victims as rednecks and racists. As far as I could tell the sole evidence to support this theory was the murderer's self-serving statements.

I'm pretty familiar with the people that live in that area, and they are neither rednecks nor racists as a general rule.

This was cold blooded mass murder-that joker was fortunate enough to commit it in a state that doesn't have the death penalty.

Well, my solution would be to get rid of people who use guns to settle "offenses" and the guns themselves if necessary, rather than trying to prevent any and all "offenses" from occuring. Getting punched the fvck out for being an a-hole is much more effective and far less deadly, in most cases.

Remember, the left thinks that anyone outside of LA, NY, Boston, and other select liberal strongholds are nothing but ignorant redneck hicks.. They see that they were hunters and assume ignorant redneck racist.. I'm surprised the OP didn't put 'neocon' into his original description.

Way to add to that misconception about people in your neck of the woods being ignorant redneck hicks.

Yeah, poor guy. I wonder if a white guy who shot a bunch of black people could use that excuse too....they drove him to it!

That's total BS. Wisconsin, where I lived for almost two decades, has a long and proud history of populism and socialism. As I recall they even had a Socialist (or populist) govenor or two back at the beginning of the 20th century, but I could be wrong about that.

BTW, I am almost certainly one of the people you would classify as a leftist.

Ok, not all people from Wisconsin are rednecks...but, I'll bet alot of hunters are. My stepmom was from there. I met her two brothers and they were definitely rednecks. Heck, I'm a big white redneck. ;)

Wisconsin has pockets of populism and socialism but to suggest those in the Northwoods are populists or socialists would be to show your ignorance of those people. They are some of the most self reliant people I've ever met and known. They don't expect things to be handed to them, they work for what they have.

They may have used racial slurs against him slurs but what he did was murder.

Chasing multiple unarmed people down and shooting them in the back is a little hard to explain away as self defense.

Have you been following this story at all? The guy walked away, took his scope off and opened fire. The people who confronted him about trespassing on private property had 1 gun among them. I repeat the convict opened fire against mostly unarmed people, shooting a couple in the back as they ran away and ambushing I believe two more as they came on snowmobiles to help.

btw screw his nationality the racial undertones of this case are sick and coming from his side. The guy has been a resident of this country for a few decades and served in our armed forces. When he gets on the stand suddenly he cant speak fluent english and blames it on old whitey why he cant read signs and why he opens up on unarmed people.

btw what makes you think they were rednecks? Just because they were white?
Sounds like you are a racist.

btw one thing that usually gets lost in this story is the fact this guy has been hunting up there for years. He knows his way around, and he knows the rules.

I have this picture of good ol boys, who just don't take kindly to his being around to begin with.

If this was the case of the KKK being out there you think they would have shown up with a single gun? You think this guy would have even made it out of the tree alive?

P.S. Ill reiterate the racism that was spewed from this guys side. His entire family was out there yapping their mouths off about how horrible white people are and how this was justified because whitey according to the convict called him a racial slur.
