Was this a good exchange?

My parents bought a Samsung LN-T4661F 46" LCD from RC-Willey last Friday. Today they decided to exchange it for a Samsung HL-T5087S 50" LED DLP (from RC-Willey also). The DLP was $800 less.

Was this a good exchange? I think this DLP they got is the smaller version of a model everyone is raving about.

Not going to look up the specs right now... but bigger, and $800 less = win in my book.

If they weren't planning on wall-mounting, it sounds like a decent trade-off to me. Not sure what LED-lighting does for DLP color fidelity, contrast etc. but it should compare well against the LCD.

LED has a longer life than bulbs. Also, the other specs are pretty much the same. 10k:1 contrast, etc.

Bigger and Cheaper for arguably a similar PQ = win in my book!

I have a 50" 1080p Samsung DLP set and I love it, I've had it for about 8 months now. I looked at LCD and plasma sets but for the money I thought the DLP had the better picture (better for sports anyway) even though it has a larger footprint and shorter bulb life. The picture quality is fantastic in hi-def.

I still need to order a replacement bulb to have as a spare for when mine goes out though.

Thats why i went with the LED version. NO bulb replacements for the life of the tv. Worth in my opinion, the price difference was only $100 at the time that i bought it.

True dat. My father-in-law has a 42" Sharp Aquos 1080p LCD which he's very happy with, but wants to get something larger, and move the Sharp to the more used family room. He's waiting until just after Christmas for the deals to kick in, I'm trying to persuade him to wait until later next year when the LED based sets drop a lot in price. I'm going to take him to see one of those fancy 15000:1 sets, and hopefully the store has an LED set in there, like the Samsung with the 500000:1 ratio, compared to what he has now (3000:1 I think?). Right now the Samsung is $5500, but by middle-late next year I figure enough will be on the market to drop that price by a few grand, so it'll be worth it.
