Was the xbox hard drive a waste?

well, i'm one of the few i suppose who think the hard drive was a waste for msft this generation.

before i thought it was a good idea. this was based on msft being able to do things other consoles couldn't. that could have been huge. ps1 broke out of the race against n64 with final fantasy 7. it was a game that took full advantage of the cd format. a game that couldn't be done on any other console at the time.

now msft has a hdd. the only game that comes to mind which can only be done on xbox due to hdd, is blinx. which is not blockbuster title. so the first problem i see is that msft has yet to release a great hdd based game. do i have any ideas for how to take advantage? no. but i'm not a game developer for msft, or msft management trying to attract gamers. i would have thought they had great ideas before deciding to include a hdd in the console.

second, the uses of hdd we have seen so far are a) not something great that would grab the attention of a random gamer, and b) not well known by a random gamer. how many people who walk into a store to buy a console are aware of being able to download content, rip musics and make custom tracks, not have to buy a memory card. even if these features are all msft saw in their vision of a console with hdd, they should have a) required all developers, especially their own, to make full use of those features and put required tutorials/training levels in all games explaining the features, and b) advertised the features.

but given the state of how msft is treating their console, i think it ultimately turned out to be a waste of money for them. money that could have been spent elsewhere for the xbox.

something like a mmorpg would make good use, but where is a blockbuster mmorpg? they should have had a mmorpg and live launch with xbox itself. or since they had to delay live for 1 year, they should have at least had a big name mmorpg to kick off live. now with current consoles hitting mid-stream and slow talk of next generation consoles starting up, and current race pretty much set (ps2> xbox +gc), it doesn't matter as things won't change.

maybe it would have been more of a neck & neck race between ps2 and xbox, if msft handled things differently

You don't play sports games, do you. Yes, I meant to use a period there.

Working at EB, the number two complaint about the PS2 I hear from multisystem owners (Behind "The damn thing broke again, won't read blue discs") is that Madden/Live/Any other sports game takes an ungodly amount of memory on those little 8MB cards.

I know customers who use the equivelant of 64MB of storage space actively on their Xbox HD for game saves. Multiple franchises in Madden, Live, Nascar takes up a lot of space. And at $20/pc for PS2 cards, 64MB would set you back a cool $160.

Is the HD a blockbuster feature? No, or at least not yet. There are some RPGs on the horizon that may take more advantage of it (Fable). But the seeds of "I don't have to pay $20 for this little memory card" have been planted and I don't think any console will go without a HD next generation.

Also it should be noted that there are quite a few games on the horizon for the Xbox that support custom soundtracks.

There are games out now that support custom sound-tracks. Also, if it weren't for the HD, you wouldn't be able to download extra maps, characters, and other stuff from Xbox Live.

No, nothing revolutionary is happening with the HD drive yet. But the PC has had it for years and games haven't done anything revolutionary with it either.

i know the problem with sports games and memory cards. and many are annoyed. but as i stated in my original post, many do not know that xbox doesn't have this problem.

or that xbox has 4 game ports (as does GC). msft should have advertised that more to make people more conscious of the fact that they'll have to pay for a multi-tap. just like when people buy printers and don't think about ink price later, people look at the console price tag and don't consider total cost (ps2 + hdd + modem + memory cards + multi tap = xbox standard console).

not yet. and that's the problem. fable and true fantasy live look great but they'll be 3rd generation games. if a big game came out with live, the console race might be with ps2 instead of GC.

sitting here in my armchair, i think money from hdd would have been better spent on ram or advertising.

but PC's also had cd-roms, yet square was able to use it in a great game that was revolutionary to the masses

If people are that curious about a xbox they'll know about the HD and the 4 ports. Those things were actually really obvious to me when I bought my xbox. They were much more advertised as features when the xbox first came out, but I think they figure most people would know or will find out by now. The HD was talked about a lot when XLive was coming out also 'cause they were bragging about how they could download and update stuff, not to mention that there was a DoA3 costume add-on pack before Xlive also. Anyone with a friend that has a xbox should know that the xbox has 4 ports 'cause they should have halo and 4 controllers :D I really doubt they win over people because of a HD and 4 ports, those are just extras that people that have xboxes brag about :) (like me)

I'll co-sign on this-- i don't see the hard drive as something that would make or break the xbox in that sense, and actually, i've heard people that know nothing about video games comment about the xbox's ability to make custom soundtracks. You almost sound as if bill gates took money from you to put the hard drives in each xbox....

Quite frankly the best thing about the hard drive is the way the animation shows you going "inside" the Xbox when you want to look at or edit your files. The other cool thing is how it says "50000+ slots available" no matter how many games you have saved on it. Honestly it was Microsoft's loss, they could sold multiple memory cards at $35 a piece (at least initially).

What's so unusual about 4 ports? Just because one console designed in the last 7 years has only 2 ports doesn't make it the standard design.

I agree that they could've put more emphasis on the HD. Money saved by not needing memory cards, flexibility of downloading new maps, versatility of using your own soundtracks.... But I doubt that MS needed to spend any more dollars on advertising. I'm pretty sure that they spent more than their competitors.

Also, people buy consoles for just one particular feature... The games. A killer app will sell more consoles than any hardware component.

I like the HDD. I get over 50,000 blocks of save games. Try doing that on a memory card :p
