Was offered FIOS (1.5 Mbps) for $14.95/month

Verizon just keeps badgering me to get on FIOS. When they first turned it on a couple months ago, they sent letters, they called, they put inserts in with the bill, they even sent a UPS overnight letter (attention getter) - all pushing FIOS.

I'm a DSL customer at their lowest rate of $14.95 a month for 768 Kbps. Last night Verizon called yet again but this time they offered me FIOS with "double the speed you have now" at the same $14.95 price and the first month free, as a special offer to current DSL customers.

They really want people off those copper phone lines and I expect the deals to get even better as time goes on.

A little off-topic, sorry, but how do you like Verizon? I've got Bellsouth DSL (1.5Mbit) and my contract just ran out. I was thinking of switching to either RoadRunner or Verizon. Just curious how you like your. Also, $15 a month for 1.5 Mbit service is a great deal, I pay $40 now.

RoadRunner is $45/mo for 8mb down and 512K up (I think), so I'd think that's a better deal than you're getting right now.

They've got a special running now: $29.95/month for first 6 months: 5mb/down 384kbps/up. I think I'll pull the trigger on it today. The 8mb service is more than $45/month here. I've seen Verizon (I believe) advertising fiber optic services available in the future. That'd be awesome to have.

Yeah, I just looked at the website. 5mb down/384k up is $39.99/mo after the first 6 months. The 8mb down/512K up is $70/mo.

I don't want them having to rewire things to handle the UPS required for FIOS. I don't want them taking out my copper wiring from the house to the street because once that happens, I am a trapped Verizon customer - I can't switch to another phone company unless that company will re-run copper back to the house.

I don't download stuff either, so more speed means nothing to me.

I know it's inevitable that it will be forced on me, though, even if I don't get FIOS - one way or another, Verizon will make people switch over to fiber, even if it's only for telephone service.

JasonSix78, I'm very pleased with my Verizon DSL. Had it for a couple years and never one problem.

What a terrible upload speed.

You've got that right. I was holding off on the RR until I shopped around some more for a service with a greater upload speed. Looks like there's not too many options.

They actually pull the copper line, rather than running fiberoptic in addition to it..? Sounds sketchy.

I pay $29.95 for 5Mbps/384Kbps RR..

If you only download..what's the problem? I don't sit around uploading anything. My 6MB Comcast connection is awsome. The upgrade is low, but I don't need it.

I hate how they keep offering Fios to old stubborn people in the boonies that don't even want it... talk about a waste. 😛

If it was offered here i would order the 30 Mbps/5 Mbps plan in a heartbeat.

Are you sure about that? Why would they waste their time pulling the existing copper. Tell them to leave it alone and just do the voodoo they need to do.

I would kill to have FIOS. Cable modem prices around MI are ridiculous. Two arms and a leg for so-so down and crappy up.

Verizon is trying to get everyone to move to FIOS so that they can shut down their copper plant... I can't blame them. Assuming they own the copper plant in your area, you will be a "trapped" Verizon customer regardless, if they turn down the copper.

I have some friends with the top end FIOS plan. At least, I used to. Once they got FIOS, they never go out. They feel like they have to suck down every last bit of bandwidth possible, they run little counters that show them how much they've downloaded, they buy bigger and bigger drives to hold all the stuff (stuff they never listen to or watch, since they are too busy downloading more stuff).

They will yank the copper when FIOS is installed (if you have an aerial run from a pole...if yours is underground, they'll just disconnect it), since people who sign up for FIOS have their phone service transferred to FIOS as well. The only exceptions I know of is if you are a FIOS broadband customer who uses a non-Verizon local phone company, and people who have alarm systems that require a copper phone line.

True that they do want to be rid of the copper. But for now, Verizon must allow competition on copper. They do not have to allow competitors to have access to their fiber. But if/when Verizon is permitted to shut down the copper, I'm sure the powers that be will require access to their fiber by other companies as a condition of shutting down the copper.

It's just like they allow competing LD carriers, electric suppliers, etc. They will not allow Verizon to have a monopoly on a public utility. As long as copper is an option, they'll let Verizon keep others off their fiber.

They might also chose to give/sell their copper to another company, so that they don't have to support it. 😉 It's happened before.

i pay 19.99 for comcast 6mb. and, i got this deal on the internet, where i get 100 dollars cash back, and a free modem. so, im basically getting paid to use 4 months of it. its sweet. i used to be paying $35 for 3mb DSL, and SBC had me locked into a contract. the comcast deal has no contract.
