Was Moses the greatest man who ever lived?

For the purposes of this thread, let's just assume two things:

1. Moses lived

2. Moses either "received the Ten Commandments from G-d on Mt. Sinai" (hm..?) OR wrote the Ten Commandments.

To rehash, the Ten Commandments are a set of societal rules:

I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
- There is an ultimate authority and there is no debate about what that final authority is.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
- Think before speaking.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them.
- God is a concept that cannot be represented visually.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- Religiously rest 😉

Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long.
- Respect the people that cared for you and raised you.

Thou shalt not kill.
- Don't kill anyone.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.
- Don't mess with relationships where two people are "committed"

Thou shalt not steal.
- Don't steal stuff.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
- Don't say stuff about another person you know is not true.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his animals, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.
- Don't compare yourself to others.

Many religious people can say their lives have been improved by following commandments 1 & 3, and anyone who has violated the rest knows the bad aftermath. So... are these the most important societal rules ever? Would the world be a better place if everyone followed these rules completely (or was genuinely sorry when a violation was pointed out to them)? Are these the only rules needed for a well-functioning society of happy people?

This reminds me of a joke:

Moses had a PR-guy called Mike. As they were fleeing Egypt they reached the Red Sea... Only to notice that the logistics-guys had screwed up, and there were no boats, and egyptians were getting closer and closer. Frustrated, Moses threw his staff at the ground and turned to Mike: "See this? There are no boats! Now what the hell am I supposed to do? Split the sea in two??". After thinking for few seconds Mike replied: "You know boss... If you did that, I could get you about half a page more in the Old Testament."

😛😀

well, i think you would have to take a close look at how much of the ten commandments is common sense...

Maybe it's common sense to you because we're living in a culture based on these rules

Maybe it's not so common either... I bet nearly eveyone on this board has had something stolen from them, and if you went to middle school you probably knew someone who was embarassed to tears because there was a false rumor spread about them (and maybe you even repeated it), etc... "Common sense isn't so common."

Hehe 😀

Ummm, if I could divide a whole sea to walk through, I would call myself a great man 😀
(God's help highly appreciated for this task 😉 ...)

But he'd been a greater man if he overclocked a Pentium 233 MMX to 3GHz...

Ah yes, all the native American societies, the Chinese/Japanese/whatever culture, all the cultures encouraged theft, murder, lying, cheating etc until they were introduced to Christianity. Suuuuure...

If I write the 11th Commandment 'Thou shalt not rape.', will you hail me as the new Messiah? Some things are common knowledge, it's just a matter of who puts it to paper first. If you write down several things that everyone knows to be true already, a few things you wish to be true, and present that to people as the truth, they are more likely to agree with you than when you just present those things you wish to be true.

Concerning most stories from the Bible I'd say take it with a few tons of salt anyway (re: splitting the sea).

Even if the two assumptions are true (he lived, and he received the 10 Commandments), he's still not the greatest man who ever lived. The two given assumptions don't illustrate any accomplishment of his, and certainly don't warrant the title. He's got nothing on guys like Isaac Newton, Adam Smith, Galileo, Einstein, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Steven Hawking, Winston Churchill...

Considering he did lead a million Israelites out of egypt. I'm just basing this on facts recorded in the bible. I'm not saying he deserves the title or anything, but saying he can't hold a candle to someone like Steven Hawking is a little harsh.
