Was it wrong of me to buy my own leather chair for work?

Normally I don't care much about what kind of desk chair the company has me use. That is unless it's 20 years old, caked with dust, and has unknown stains all over it. This chair was provided to me as a replacement for my previous chair that had an armrest failure (may it RIP). Oddly enough this was one of the only available chairs they could find and nobody else wanted to use it. Golly, I wonder why? So I searched the conference rooms and among one of the many mismatched chairs I find one I could easily live with for 8 hours a day 5 days a week. I replaced the chair they gave me with the one I picked out. I used this newly aquired chair for 2 days. Today I come into work and what do I see sitting in my cube? That fvucking dust mite infested urine stained wonder they gave me before! So I put my things down and promply head over to Office Depot which is just around the corner. I pick out this chair which was on sale for $99. I head back to the office and lug the chair into my cube. It took about 15 minutes to put together. Was it wrong of me to buy my own leather chair for work? Nobody seems to care so far.

Why would that be wrong of you? You paid for it with your own money.

I think it was pretty selfish of him not to buy one for everyone.

Nothing wrong with that, although I would have attempted to get my employer to upgrade the chair for me.

nothing wrong with that. just don't be surprised when it mysteriously develops legs and wanders off into a conference room, someone else's cube, or disappears completely.

I would have talked to HR or the office manager first to find out if they would replace the chair at their expense. If not, then I would invest in the new chair, but I would make it clear to everyone that I was buying it myself.

yeah definately find a way for people to know that it is your chair that you paid for with your money so that way it doesn't create legs and walk off.

You definitley need to ID that chair as YOUR PERSONAL chair, or it will find a new home on it's own...

the only real risks you run are:

getting other employees riled up "because you got a leather chair" and they didn't

having it disappear or someone think it's the companies and not letting you take it if you leave or they replace chairs again.

was the chair you had picked out from the conference room back in the conference room? if it was, it was probably a "boss" saying hey you're not better than anyone else, you will use crap chairs like everyone here...if thats the case, expect a closed door meeting with the boss soon about how you are just one of many employees and will have to remove your leather chair or else other employees will be upset.

The chairs in the entire building are old. Only people who are managers or higher get to have nice new leather chairs. If I were to have a new chair ordered then everyone would start demanding new chairs. If they gave me a new chair and left everyone else with the old ones then I would feel guilty. Even though I bought this chair myself I still feel guilty since it's so much better than everyone elses.

I've thought about doing that so I can have a good ergonomic chair, but decided it wasn't worth the risk of someone stealing it.

get one of those laptop security cords and attach it to your desk or something.

The chair from the conference room is the same quality as everyone elses. It's actually the same exact type of chair that a few people near me are using. The chairs here are just plain crap. The replacement chair I was given is bellow crap.

Great Idea!!! Many of the managers have aeron chairs, but my cube had one that was broken :( I now get a much crappier foam one. I brought my own mouse in (only have a laptop) and thought I was taking a large chance! (no problems yet....)

It wasn't wrong to buy your own chair - just make sure it is clearly identified as yours.

It was wrong to take a chair from the conference room.
