Was it ever determined whether Win2K, WinXP, or Win2003 was fastest for crunching?

I would hope that with fewer services enabled by default, that 2003 would be fastest.

I'm not sure anyone has taken the time to prove this out.

My anecdotal evidence shows that a 2003 Server is slightly faster than a 2000 Server. This is the same server machine after an OS upgrade with no other hardware changes. I don't have the exact times (Stupid SetiQ crash) but I know that 2003 was slightly faster.

My guess is that it varries by project but that any differnce is negligable.

Well, for some time ago was forced to downgrade the old dual-p2-333 from win2k to NT4, resulting in VLAR taking 1-2 hours less. Then v3.08 later was released, cut yet again some time off the crunching, so if remembers correctly v3.08 averaged 17h on VLAR while 18h20m on "normal" wu under v3.03...

On other angle-ranges didn't detect any noticeable differences between NT4 & win2k...

Remember v3.08 is slower on the bulk of WUs (av AR & VHAR WUs)

No idea about the rest:eek:;)

Yes, it's a reason was comparing VLAR-v3.08 against "normal"-v3.03. ;)

In my recollection, v3.08 was roughly 10% slower than "classic-cmd" v3.03 in "normal" wu, while didn't detect any marked difference either way on VHAR. Then angle-range drops below 0.2 or something v3.08 was faster than v3.03, even under win2k.

No idea if NT4 also gives speed-increase on VLAR for faster cpu's or maybe only on this particular machine it went faster...
