Was it a mistake to lock in for 2 years on an X2/3G? Worth return for Bionic?

I am still within the 14 day return period, so I wanted to make sure. I see the Droid Bionic would have been a better choice, but would I be able to keep my number and apps I've paid for? I'm not eligible for the regular upgrade until 2013.

Would returning it affect my credit or eligibility for starting another contract by ordering the phone through Amazon?

I may do that. The display on this thing is atrocious. I've never seen so much ghosting and pixelated movement on a modern mobile device. Maybe I've been spoiled by the ipad's awesome screen.

There's always a better phone just around the corner, keep that in mind. Do you get LTE service in your area?

Yes, you would keep your apps as they are tied to your google account so when you get another android phone you would simply redownload them.

As for the number and whatnot, you sound like you are going to cancel your account and then open a new one? Dunno why you would go through that hassle. Keeping your account lets you keep your number without porting it to a new account number.

And yes I would probably ditch the dx2 with better devices on the very near horizon.

did they change the screen from the droidX to the X2? i love my screen, very visible in direct sunlight, nice color and not hard to read for a long time. i find it much easier to deal with than the ip4 screen. the extra size makes it much easier to look at for me.

Yeah, went to crappy pentile junk. Maybe it would work for you, maybe not, some people don't seem to mind.

Isn't that what I would have to do to switch the phone though? It says I'm not eligible for an upgrade, so getting a refund and starting a new contract with another phone seems my only option.

If you are within the return window, pretty sure you just return the phone and exchange it for another one. Although, I suspect your return window won't get you to the release of these other better devices.

Starting a new contract would break your existing one and cause you to pay whatever the ETF is.

How can you describe the iPad's screen as awesome? Even the iPad 2 doesn't have a Retina Display. If it truly is that bad, it means the X2 has a terrible display.

That is why some of us freak out about a Pentile display. If you are one of the people who notices, it is terrible.

OP, both the Bionic and the upcoming Nexus are Pentile. If you cant notice, find a HTC phone you like (maybe the upcoming Vigor?).

to me its like watching an old CRT monitor refresh at 30 hz when anything moves across the screen on them

the flicker/shimmer is insane

The bionic is a piece of shit by itself too, pentlie screen, locked bootloader and awful battery life.
I wouldn't touch any of the LTE phones, matter fact just went back to my droid 3, yeah keyboard makes up for it until i receive the iphone 4s on the 21st.

1280x720 for the Nexus though so it's likely going to be much less of a problem

yeah not sure who in their right mind would buy an X2 at this moment in time...

edit: on contract anyway, you can pick them up off-contract for 200$ or less...

You say that as if most apps will utilize that native resolution in the first six months to a year, when my experience with a Nook Color and Honeycomb tablets say otherwise. Most likely one will have to use Honeycomb's (then ICS's) "Zoom" feature to make WVGA apps usable on the 720p screen, which will highlight Pentile's inadequacies.

I've never heard of those problems. Hm. I don't think it's going to be a big deal...

You have never seen apps fly to pieces at higher resolutions on Android? I have, and the worst part is that it is often the better apps. For example, Chuzzle is downright unusable on both a Nook Color and a Xoom without the Zoom trick. The interface is all over the place. Everything from ESPN is pretty bad about that, as are many higher-end games (they will only fill part of the screen with a black border).

Now a surprising number of apps just work at higher res with obvious stretching that looks bad but at least fill the screen. A few apps even work well at HD resolutions, notable the Tegra apps (which is a duh).

But for many people many apps they depend on are the kind that breaks at higher resolutions. My friend's bank's app flies to pieces at native res on his Xoom, without the Zoom feature it would be unusable. It is obvious that the Zoom feature is Google's solution to the problem of fragmented resolutions on Android.

The only problem is WVGA apps Zoomed to be HD resolution look terrible. Functional, but ascetically terrible.

Yeah, Android won't be able off to pull off an easy trick like Apple did when they doubled the resolution. WVGA has a 1.666 length to width ratio, HD is 1.777 so no easy transition there. Gingerbread does support up 1280x720 but I doubt there is even 1 app coded for HD even if some may work fine without adjustment.
