was it a bad idea to format my partions as Basic instead of GPT?

the moment I got my laptop which came with Windows 8, I formatted it and deleted the GPT partition table then recreated the partitions with a DOS partition table and installed Windows 7 just fine

I always delete the GPT partitions because I was never able to restore a disk image if I take it with let's say Acronis True Image properly, so to keep things simple I kept the partitions at basic because I read that GPT Partition's only benefit is that it supports disks of more than 2 TB

I read somewhere on the forums someone saying keep GPT disks for faster boot performance? Is that true? and how does it do that? sounds like a gimmick to me, can someone please confirm and guide meh in the right direction?

do you think i should format and redo everything using GPT again or is there no gain other than the increased partition size support?

The biggest problem I can see, is that you blew away your restore partition. So when it comes time to sell it, you can't really restore it to original condition. If you have been having difficulty restoring disk images, the problem isn't the partition.

May as well leave it alone for now. You wouldn't gain much by going back and starting over. But you would spend a lot of time at it.

oh im not worried about the recovery partition bro, it just contains the crappy ASUS Windows 8 flavor of the installation which I don't like, I created the recovery DVDs if that matters

with current drives it's all fake ...
ie: 4K physical / 512b logical

Unless your drive is larger it is a non-issue.

I still use basic partitions because GPT offers me no practical benefits.

IMO swings and roundabouts.

For me the thing I like most about GPT is the advantage it offers for interacting with the UEFI BIOS through Windows.

How important are boot times to you? The increase in speed is more to do with running full UEFI with CSM disabled and the difference for me is less than 2 seconds between legacy and UEFI however legacy allows me to use the better performing RAID driver in the OS. YMMV
