Was I out of line in this FS/FT deal?

Was gonna buy something from this guy over in FS/FT.
Asked him for references... had very little (7 pos), so I requested him to ship first.
He said ok, but I noticed a little rudeness in his PM, so it turned me off so I cancelled on the deal.
The first PM was 1pm this afternoon, I cancelled on him just now and he says I "wasted his time".
Me
Hi,
I'll take the Pentium 2 mobo combo for $xx shipped.
Heat under psteng19.
Do you have heat?
If not, do you mind shipping first?
LMK thanks.

Him
Hi, my heatware is *****. I prefer payment first, do you have paypal? my paypal is also under *********. If you pay today before 4pm, i'll ship the package today via USPS Priority Mail. Thanks.

Me
I'm sorry, you have too little heat and I will not pay first.
If this means anything to you, I have 131 positives, 0 negatives under psteng19.
LMK, thanks.

Him
alrite alrite........ let me have ur addy, i'll ship first.

Me
Honestly, if you're not comfortable shipping first, I understand and won't force you.

Him
well, either way, just give me the address and i'll ship it today. as of whether you want to pay today or after you receive the package on monday it's up to you. not my problem.

Me
Sorry, I'll pass on the deal now.
Good luck.

Him
yup, thanks for wasting my time. i hope i'll meet someone more reasonable next time.

Me
Sorry, but your attitude throughout this whole deal from your 2nd PM on was pretty crummy, and my policy is to never deal with such people.
Have a nice day :D

I would say you overreacted on the deal.

The guy basically said he'd ship the product and you can pay him whenever you'd like. Either when you receive it or when he ships it. He even offered to ship it that day.

He was brief, but I wouldn't get all bent out of shape about it.

When you're dealing with money you can't be too careful. I wouldn't have put his name here though.

I had some guy string me along on FS/FT. It was a damned good deal, but after I said ok, I didn't get a pm for quite a while. Oh well.

He was being careful.

He basically ended the deal because he didn't like the guy's attitude. Something that I've found when read in text can be VERY VERY different than how someone would say it in person.

Well, personally, this would have done it for me:

Him

That's just me though.

What's wrong with what he said there? I think he was being pretty accomodating. But that's just me. :)

I also don't want to come accross like I think you sold the guy out or wasted his time. You had every right to back out of the deal and you never said that you'd take it for sure. So, up until that point the sale hadn't been made yet and you had no obligation to buy it.

It wasn't because of who sends first, but more of the attitude.

I just got bad vibes when he said, "alrite... alrite..." "not my problem...".

I may have taken him either way. If he caught me in the wrong mood, I may not have been as polite as you. If he caught me in a more understanding mood, I may not have cared and just went foward with the deal.

Note to self: Get meds fixed.

:)

I understand that, but if he would've sent first, what does it matter?

To me, when I'm doing a sale or a trade, I could care less about what the guy's tone is on the PM so long as it doesn't affect the deal. He may have had a poor choice of words and a slight attitude, but he in no way made it seem like he'd troll you or anything. Especially since he's sending to you first.

Like I said, I would've done the deal, but that's just me. I don't think what he said was really that bad.

I've turned down deals because people were very shady before, but in this case I really don't think you had a reason to worry. He agreed to what you wanted but seemed to be saying it didn't matter all that much to him he just wanted to complete the deal, if you were going to back out of it at least give him a reason not just "Sorry, I'll pass on the deal now. Good luck." That just comes off like you changed your mind because you found a better deal or something and left him hanging.

I've no experience with FS/T, but it seems to me you overreacted a bit. I didn't detect any attitude until after you'd canceled the deal. However, if you're uncomfortable with a deal, you were right to cancel on it.

i'd be a little distraught too shipping first, but he had no complaints about it, so you definately overreacted IMO..

When I first read it, I thought you over-reacted.

But then I thought of something: You followed your gut feeling.

I'm sure at one point we have all said to ourselves "FSCK, if I only listened to myself.. yadda yadda yadda"

So, yeah the deal probably would have been fine, but hey.. at least this way you know nothing bad is/did happen.

I'd say you were a little over reactive.

He worded it kind of strangely, but if I went through several PMs with someone and prepared to send the package, then have him(you, in this case) come off somewhat smartass-like, I would be just of annoyed, too. :)

His response after you cancelled the deal suggests that he doesn't have the friendly, helpful attitude you would want in case there was a problem with the merchandise. I think you're justified in being cautious because of the high level of uncertainty involved with FS/FT transactions.

You might have wasted his time if you told him you wanted them, then PM'ed him back going "No thanks". He probally spent time to package it, clean it up, find a box...
