I was play softball in my Sunday rec league last weekend;
I play catcher and I like to chat it up with the umpire (a carry over from when I played catcher in HS);
The other team's pitcher comes to bat and steps into the box;
As I continue to chat with the ump (who is chatting back, BTW), the pitcher steps out of the box;
He looks at me and says, "Can you not talk while I am batting."
After giving a blank stare for a moment I mumble, "Um, OK.";
The next inning, I come up to bat;
After the first pitch, I step out of the box and as I step back into the box, the pitcher tries to "quick pitch" me (pitching before the batter is generally ready);
The up calls a no pitch;
The pitcher complains that he can pitch once I step in the box;
The up reminds the pitcher that "This is not major league baseball. You cannot quick pitch him. You have to let the batter get ready.";
The pitcher bitches and moans a little more, then, eventually shuts up and pitches.
An inning or two later, the pitcher comes back up to bat;
He steps in the box and the pitcher is about to start his windup and I say, in a loud voice;
"When I was a freshman, I tried out for varsity baseball!!"
The guy steps out of the box and looks at the ump and asks, "Are you OK with that?"
The up says, "I am fine, get in the box.";
He steps back in the box and as the pitcher starts his windup, I say, in a loud voice, "I mostly played outfield that first year!!"
After the pitch, the guy steps out of the box and says, "Is that because I quick pitched you?" (At least he knew he was being a jerk. BTW, he also tried to quick pitch other batters throughout the game.);
I say, "I am done now. I think we understand each other."
I was quiet the rest of the game.
I know it was not the nicest thing to do, but was I being a jerk? Would you have done something similar?
