k, basically im building a new computer. yeah my tax return will be in in about a week etc... so i got the money and my machine i have now..well my sig can answer that. i was going to go for the x2 4800 when i realised that for 200 dollars less you can go with 4400 and i can easily overclock it to or passed the 4800. but, now im second guessing it. so many people have opterons and seems to swear by them that i am re thinking my purchase. what do you recommend i go with?

im going to be using this machine mostly for gaming and video encoding/decoding for website development.

If you're after a better 3d performance, spending more on the videocard is going to be a bigger deal.

Do you have that set already? If getting a lower cost CPU to get a better videocard going would be an option, that might be the way to go.

I would get an X2 3800+ and then overclock it while buying a more powerful video card.

An X2 3800+ will be considerably cheaper than an Opteron or any other X2 while performing nearly identical to one another.

they only problem with the 3800 is that it has less cache than 4400 or the 4800. many people recommend 3800 but i doubt ill get it. i agree with "spending more on the videocard is going to be a bigger deal" which is why im going to probably go with 4400 or maybe a slightly cheaper comparable opteron.

If you're overclocking, a 4400+ or Opteron is probably a much better use of funds.

If it means more money you could devote to another part of the system, go with a cheaper CPU.

basically, wat ever needs to be said, has already been said. the only difference between the x2's is the slightly different speeds and cachs. get a 3800+ and a good graphic card. very few games right now are written to take advantage of the dual cores and the only real increase in performance is in multi-threaded apps. so if you going 4 games, get the 3800. if u going 4 multi-threaded apps, get a better one such as the 4400. that's it really. update us about ur beast!

yeah im pretty sure either 4400 or opteron 175. it doesn't mean more money could be devoted to something else. just means i may not have anything left from my tax return...which is ok

I've got a 4400X2 running at 2.6Ghz, i don't regret buying it in the least. An opteron may well overclock to the same level, or even higher, for less money. If you can afford it then i'd go with the 4400X2, but for gaming then you should be spending at least that much on the graphics card, if not more.

If it's a choice between a 1900XT and a 4400/4800 and a dual 1900XT rig with a 3800 or 165 then i'd go with the latter.

What if my main game is PokerStars?

Opteron 165 or above.

You already have a crossfire motherboard? And you're going to buy a X1900 Crossfire and a X1900 XT?

If you're getting crossfire 1900XTs (don't bother with the XTX) then go for the best opteron you can afford or a 4400X2.

I'm not all that sure about the difference between opterons and dual core, a few opterons can hit 2.7Ghz but most seem to top out at around 2.6 ish, which i can do on my 4400X2. Opteron would get my vote if the stock speed were the same due to it's intended use, but it's not worth shelling out more to go for a faster opteron rather than a 4400X2. All imo, would love to be shown data showing otherwise.

yeah the xtx just isn't worth it. hundred dollars more to have them overclock it for you. it will probably be 4400 x2. should be builiding in a week or so. will post results

I don't like current dual cores, because by the time they're really "necessicary" and the standard, they're going to be much better than they are now, and much cheaper.

I say an Opteron or a 3700 Sandy.

Opteron 165, mine runs at 2.5 stock Vcore, got it for $180 retail in their first week out one of my best purchases.
