Great read and all very true.

If you haven't had a nice long sit down with an older gentlemen telling you war/life stories then you truly haven't lived.

Thats strange. I was a Boomer so I know alot of these guys or I did . Its funny . Its very easy to tell who was on the front line and who wasn't . The guys that never saw action Talk alot . The guys who fought had very little to say. The heros who did kill many really never recover. Funny how that works. To many War movies trying to sell people on killing .

Sadly, I lost my first grandfather at age 58. I remember reading the citation for his Bronze Star from WW2, but never had the chance to talk to him about any of it. My uncle said he got him to talk about it one time when he was a teenager and my grandfather recounted how he stormed a German bunker and killed three while catching shrapnel in his back from a land mine on the way. He died too soon, but smoking non-filtered Camels and cherry pipe tobacco, and working in the coal mines after the war probably didn't help.

My second grandfather died much later, in his 70's and I managed to get him to talk just one time. He got a few sentences in and started to choke up and I caught a tear roll down before he looked away, clammed up, and stared out his front window at Lake Chelan and that was it. My grandmother told me she thought she was the only one he ever really told about his experiences and even then, she was sure there was a lot he never spoke of.
