So, she buys a fridge from a well kown place and a well known brand. Two days before warranty expires she gets another 3 year added on. $149 for the warranty.

4 months down the road she awakens and goes to work, comes home and everything is ruined, water on the floor and all that jazz.

3 times guys come to try and fix the thing, no luck.

She calls about warranty and is told they will pay her $499 (Fridge was $899) plus $250 for lost food. She tells them nope her warranty should cover it. Then they tell her the warranty is covering it, but she is to pay for all 3 times they came to look at it.

She is pissed and doesn't know where to go.

I told her to just take it back where she got it or take the money being offered and run.

What would you do?

I had the same problem with my fridge...

My firdge started giving problems a couple of days before the warranty expired. I called up the local agency from where I brought the fridge and they said they would send someone to take a look at the fridge. The person arrived after 3 days.. and could not figure out what was wrong..

Another guy came in a week later and found that some part had gone bad and needs to be replaced. So he takes this part and leaves and said that the local agency does not carry this part and will have to be ordered from some other state.

15 days go by and still no word. Now its been close to a month since my fridge is out. So I call the local agency again and they say that the part is on its way. A week goes by and the technician comes by and replaces the part. Great !!!

Unfortunately, the part goes bad again next morning. This time I am really pissed. I call up the local agency and this time they have a repalcement part available immediately. They say that they can come and replace it the same day, but they will charge me for parts and labor because I no longer have warranty

I was like WTF DUDE? YOU JUST PUT THIS PART YESTERDAY!!! It blows out today and I am supposed to pay for it? (Something like $225)

Local agency guy acts like an a$$ and says that he cannot do anything. So i decide not to go ahead with the repairs and contact the fridge company instead.

Next, I find out the email id of the regional managers and write to him the whole situation and by that time its been about 2 months since my fridge was out.

Next day, I get a phone call from the regional manager himself and he works with the local agency to get the part replaced ASAP, free of cost, and gives me an additional years warranty for all the trouble that I went through.

Cliffs :
- Fridge does not work just before warranty period.
- Local dealer changes parts after long wait
- Part blows out the very next day
- Local dealer says that I will be charged parts and labor this time around
- Wrote a mail to the fridge company and they get the parts replaced free of cost + give free warranty coverage for another year
- Profit :)

That's why most extended warranties/service contracts are such a scam. In theory they sound great, but actually getting a company to make good on one can be damn near impossible.

I'm not saying they're ALL like that, but it's certainly the majority.
