Warnings about LG L226WT quality - YMMV

I posted this in keysplayr2003's thread about his L226WT purchase and I thought it was important enough to merit its own topic. I may have a defective panel and I'm considering going back to best buy to get a replacement tomorrow. If I do, I'll certainly update this thread with the results. Until then however, I will warn that YMMV with this panel.

Here's the post/mini-review:"

I am actually considering returning the L226WT I bought last week. I've been having nothing but problems with it. I had the viewsonic 22" but returned it hoping the LG was better. Judging from my experiences, I cannot recommend this monitor at all.

Non TN-related problems:

1. Very poor out of the box calibration - I had to severely shift the gamma curves - way too much blue. I was able to use the calibration tool and get a reasonably accurate picture - but not perfect. I had never seen a monitor so far off.
2. Confusing Sharpness tool - now I can never tell if it's quite sharp or not
3. Random blacking out - screen flickers and sometimes shuts off - shows half the screen with the backlight fully lit and the other off - could be a defect! I've actually had to power down several times so the screen will come back.
4. Syncing problem with forteManager software (calibration tool that comes with it) - the screen appears in broken chunks - fixes itself when I turn the screen off and on again. Could also be a defect.
5. Buttons are very difficult to press. They are located in a strange place.
6. ForteManager gives page not found errors if you click on certain tabs in Vista.
7. Very poor dark colors response - I can't see past 8,8,8. The Viewsonic 22" TN showed down to 2,2,2. (My VP930b (P-MVA) shows beautifully down to 1,1,1)

Good things:

1. Shows reds very nicely - good representation of red/orange hues from pictures and in games.
2. Doesn't have nearly as bad a TN effect when looking from below as the Viewsonic did (it showed major red halos around the pixels from as little at 10 degrees below the screen)
3. Nice bezel design - clean and functional.

Oh, I also wanted to mention some other things I've experienced.

1. The panel occassionally turns green. Like the Green pixels all go on. Others have mentioned this problem and it may be a problem with the forteManager software.

2. Problem 4 I mentioned above has also been noted in NewEgg reviews.

3. It's noisy! I can actually hear it over my computer (granted my computer is damn near silent) - but I've never "heard" a monitor before.

I'm not alone on these it would seem.

Sounds like you have a bad monitor.

The other thread, the owner seemed happy enough, along with the other replies there that I was considering returning my 204wt to get the 226

I own the same one, typing on it now. Turn gamma off for one, that helped me alot. But honestly, it doesn't matter what you do, you have a defective panel. Switching off or stuck greens/whatever, is NOT a sign of a healthy monitor. Exchange for a new one, you will be happy. I am atleast :)

While I think you're probably correct that the panel is physically defective - it was slightly alarming to me that I was able to find other people who experienced the exact same problems. If you look at just the reviews on NewEgg, more than 10% (at least 4 out of 35 reviews when I last checked) experienced one of the problems that I'm guessing are related to a panel defect.

I'm going to go replace the specific panel today and see what results.

Yes, your panel is definitely a bad one. I was able to see 2,2,2 in the color response test. I believe I posted some photos in that thread you spoke of.

I can tell you the I had severe reservations about going to LCD from CRT. But now that I have, I don't think I could have picked a better 22" panel for the money. I'm not going to recommend my monitor, because I own it. Folks might take me as defending my purchase. Well, I may be subconsiously, but I am really happy with this monitor. Willing to do testing for others to help them decide if it's good for them or not.

Anyway, sorry yours turned out to be a bad one. Bring it back and let them replace it. I just can't see how anyone could be unhappy with this monitor except for very niche users with special needs.

So... update to the story:

I called my two local Best Buys to go get a replacement today. First one said they didn't have one (the closer one). I then called the farther one and they said they had 1. So I hopped in my car and drove down there and it turned out to be an open box item... not only that, but it was one sitting on the display shelf... and the demo guy just knocked into it as he was showing it to me... now I probably could have gotten it and it would have worked fine.. but they also had one of the Samsung 226BWs sitting on the neighboring shelf. I knew they were selling the samsung for a little more but I figured I'd just ask about it (it has the same 2ms TN panel with the dynamic contrast program).

They said it cost the same, so I took it and brought it home. So far so good - I'm messing around with it now - but it seems worlds better than the other one. I'll tell you more when I know more! But unfortunately, the situation was not one that permitted me to retry the same situation with a different monitor.

Phlargo can you look on the back of your Samsung to see if they model number has an A or S after it? There's some controversey
surrounding it. Thanks.
