Warning: Walmart HP Laptop: Known Quality Problems - Mod Please allow this

I just get off phone call to HP tech support for my N5125 laptop microphone recording problem, and here is problem I am having and the response from HP:

Problem: the included ESS sound device can not record neither from built-in nor external mic at an acceptable level, volume is extreme low and quality is poor even after +20db gain.

Anyone can confirm experiencing the same problem here?

HP support: this is a known issue and they are working on a fix but have no idea how soon it will be ready.

This means that we can not use any audio recording/voice chat/voice recognition application till they have a fix.

They had just fixed anthoer Audio/Modem problem (modem can not dial out after 2/21/2001) and the patch is available on the site.

I have to say overall I am satisfied with this laptop, but the not for sound/modem module - they could select better parts other than ESS...

Yeah, but I believe that the other person's thread is BS. His problems sound fabricated and I think he was trying to deter people from wanting one of these laptops so that he would have a better chance of actually getting one.

I mean, MS Word causing screen flicker!?!?!?

I rather start a claim against Thinkpad I seriese. Man those laptop sucked #$@. I was robbed my money.

I haven't tried to dial out on my modem yet
(ADSL) here.. it wont work? you have to patch it?

I'm using my HP N5125 right now and have been using it every day since I got it a little over a month ago.

So far I have not had any problems with mine and I love it. Can you clarify the problem that your having? Thanks!

Some laptops have modem issues after 2/21/01. Not ALL modems have this issue, but some do. In fact I know of a couple of Gateway systems with intergrated modems that will experience the same issue.

Have you tested your built-in mic or use an ext mic to chat/record?
