I drive a Ford Escape '02.
Anyway, this warning light came on last night which got me rather worried.
It's supposed to be for "Emission Systems" according to the manual
But i've got no idea what that means or how dangerous it is.

Bringing it down to the mechanic tomorrow. Hope it's ok.

Take your vehicle to Autozone and ask them to hook it up to their computer and analyze the warning code. They'll do it for free.

And, yes, definitely check that the gas cap is tight.

Gas cap. Ok. I had the problem when i had about a quarter tank left.
SO i went to the gas station and got it filled up.
The attendant did his job. And I checked to make sure that it was secure afterwards.

Don't quite understand the AutoZone suggestion but since I'm not in the States. Blah.

It could be a failing O2 sensor. Since it's under warranty, the dealer's service department should be able to resolve it for you. At times, I've heard of O2 sensors failing when cold water was splashed on them. This could be understandable because since it's mounted on the exhaust manifold, heat and cold water don't mix.

Let us know what the resolution was when you get back from the service department.

Oh, on a semi-related note, I had the same issue happen to one of my Dodge vehicles a few years back. I retrieve the code and it indicated the O2 sensor. However, Dodge had a weird way of clearning the error light. I had to literally turn my ignition on an off 200 times - to clear the light "gasp." However, I did clear the error light and it never came back on for the O2 sensor. Just a fluke, I guess.

The light will be cleared after 3 complete driving cycles.

I know on my Dodge, I can get the code to display by turning the key quickly from on-off-on 3 times. On earlier models it displayed a code by blinking the check engine light (kinda like POST code beeps), on my year it simply displays a numerical value in the odometer.

Edit: mine just came on two weeks ago because a hose going to the carbon canister worked it's way loose.
