Here's my story...

I brought a HP Jornada 565 for $180 at Office Depot and the sales person convince me to get the "Kemper Extended Warranty" on it for $50. I figure, it's a good deal since screen replacement is covered by said warranty.

Five months later, my Jornada dropped and I broke the screen. I called Kemper and they said "just get it fixed, send us the receipt, and we will pick up the bill." Well, I took it into my local authorized HP Service Place and they said that there's only a refurbish exchange on it for $260. I thought what the hell, I will get it exchanged for the refurb system and send Kemper the bill.

Two months later (now), Kemper sent me a letter saying that my request is voided with no check for the $260. They citied that the Jornada is still covered by the "HP 1 Year Warranty" and that they will not pay for the repair. HP (on anyt company) firmly stands against screen cracks of any kind, laptop or PDA. Kemper mislead me as a customer and I want to fight back.

Kemper is a freaked up company that makes me very, very, mad. What else can I do to get my money back for the service that they said that they would cover?

You gotta have that sh1t in writing. If you don't, you're pretty much screwed. Plus, they have the technicality of telling you to get it "fixed" while you exchanged it."

Good luck though.

Pretty much all the extended warranty plans sold by retail outlets work like this; they don't take effect until the manufacturer warranty has run out. That's why they're called "extended." That being said, it is pretty foul for the Kemper rep to have told you what he/she did. Next time better read the contract/rules of the warranty, rather than trust the operator at Kemper that gets paid $7.00/hr to get you off the phone as fast as possible.

yeah, that sucks that it won't cover it b/c the product was under mfg. warranty but the particular problem wasn't covered!?! Shady!

Yep, the extended warranty doesn't kick in until the manufacturer's warranty expires. The big print giveth, and the small print taketh away.

On the other hand, I'm not surprised they wouldn't pay $260 to repair something that cost $180. I don't think anyone would cover a repair that exceeded the purchase price.
