warning - divx movies - possible legal action against me, although not likely

I got a letter in the mail a week ago from the university notifying me that I was violating their terms of service and would be kicked off the network for sharing MP3's, divx movies and old TV episodes within the local network.

The MPAA caught wind of this, and threatened to sue the university and individuals if these actions were not stopped.

End result: I was given five days to stop sharing movies, or the university would disable my account, begin disciplinary proceedings and that i may face significant legal problems.

this is not a repost of the FBI crackdown threads, another notification that the olden days of file sharing are limited and a warning to university students and others that the MPAA, in addition to the record labels are beginning to crack down.

i dont have a personal webpage but if anyone would like i can send you a .jpg of this letter and you can post it for all to see.

Clarification:
I formerly shared MP3?s, Divx and TV shows. I only had to stop sharing Divx as that is what the MPAA was pissed about.

The MPAA was probably responding to a lot of different users at your university, not specifically you (unless you know for certain otherwise). I wouldn't worry about it.

Don't worry - the same thing happened to me, except Campus Security came by to tell me. And then I had to sign an oath to get back on resnet a month later.

You can send me the .jpg and I'll post it. My e-mail address is in my profile.

LETTER POSTED

It's geocities - you know what to do ;)
I was planning on hosting it on my own web server, but the firewall here at work is hardcore - I can't telnet or ftp out of here :(

So.. Let me guess. There is something wrong with them asking you to stop using their network for sharing of illegaly copied material? Movies, in this case.

He's worried about the MPAA, not his university. I thought that was pretty obvious.

Not entirely related but... Is it illegal to share old tv-shows? For example, finnish television showed Star Trek: The Next Generation about 10 years ago. And I taped the episodes (yeah, I'm a nerd). But I didn't get all of them. So I have been using Morpheus to find the missing episodes. Is it illegal for me to download those episodes (well, I honestly don't give a flying f*ck whether it's illegal or not)? How is it different in legal sense if I taped them from tv?

Simple solution, stop sharing your movies over the network. If one of your friends, or somebody wants one, then make the folder password protected and give them the password. You don't want to get busted for letting random ppl at your school get free movies.
I don't have any of my stuff shared on my school network, except for an empty folder, which, is where I put stuff when I want to transfer it over to my laptop.

edit: LOL, I was just looking around the network right now and some fool has their C drive shared with the ability to change/add/delete files, hehe.

Why is it when someone actively pursues a law, everybody gets up in arms about it? There are laws put in place to protect artits and their material. yea, it kinda sucks, cuz noone likes waste their money, but to proclaim that the end of the free internet is over is like saying that because someone got put away for murder, according to law, that the end of democracy is upon us. I trade movies/mp3s/ etc etc, and have yet to purchase any verisons of windows or Linux, but do I get up in arms when my ISP tells me not to run an FTP? No, I simply use it more discretely.

Yes it is illegal to distribute old TV shows. They are still under the same laws as new stuff.

network neighborhood only

and my point was not to complain but to further let people know that laws are starting to be enforced
