I know they aren't as good as Klipsch Promedia 5.1, or the old z5500 setup, but I think they are as good as you are going to do these days for a boxed 5.1 setup.

I currently have the z506 as a home theater setup, and they are ok for my low standards. Looking to upgrade to these for the remote control feature, better sound, and optical in. I have not seen them under $340 so this seems like a decent deal.

Home theater snobs need not apply :)

I personally cannot comment on these speakers, it does make me sad to see people saying they arent as good as the z5500. What a great set of speakers they have been to me. I hope they continue to last. They are my office surround sound setup.

Yes Mr. Angry Banana man, please do tell. What better 5.1 all inclusive system can I purchase for $125? Let us know so we can buy that hot deal!

A definite exaggeration on his part but seriously, this is only a hot deal because Logitech has the PC speaker market cornered and for the last 10 years, was able to keep their speaker prices high due to no competition.

The set sells for ~350 so this is certainly a hot deal if that's exactly what you're looking for...but for $250 dollars you're better off buying a HTiB. But if you're trying to get creative with your $250...

Let your 6 channel analog soundcard do the work, set it to 4 channels and phantom the center. It can be a very clean set up and will sound tons better than the logitech set, but it will require some work to put together. Lastly, it is as modular as can be.

Want to upgrade to a receiver down the line? No problem. Add a center channel? Yep. Upgrade the fronts, or subwoofer, and sell the parts second hand to recoup some money? You bet.

It would be even better if you have an old analog 5.1 receiver in the basement/garage collecting dust, you can skip the amplifiers and put that money toward a center channel. Hell, since HDMI has supplanted all other forms of audio, those receivers can be had for $50 on craigslist.

But yeah, as a PC speaker system, it's certainly a hot deal.

I like you, I ordered the 2 SP-BS21-LRs a couple of days ago and I was looking at that amplifier too, but the shipping time is outrageous(17-28 business days). Is there anything wrong with the Pioneer Sub(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882117402)? I have the Z5500 right now and I'm thinking of trying some new speakers.

reallyscrued, thanks for the reply. I was hoping someone would give an explanation! Anyways, for me, I really don't want a receiver since I am trying to keep the room clean. I have an HTPC in a closet that feeds out to wall mounted speakers and TV. The nice thing about the z906 is that I can just have that little control box mounted discretely under the TV and still use a remote to control it. With the system you designed, I would have to power everything up and down when I want to use the system (I am sure I could get creative but simplicity is key for me). I am sure your system would be great, so thanks for letting us know! I was just hoping there was a better 5.1 box system out there for cheap :)

Thanks for understanding my viewpoint, but I'd like to point out that there's nothing wrong with leaving the amplifiers powered on for extended periods of time. I'd just flip the switch and leave it that way. If it *does* happen to bother you, it would be wise to mount them out of sight but near the vicinity of your seated position (under a desk or inside a tape drawer) and make up for the slack in longer cabling.

The Z906 is cool if you want extra inputs and choices for decoding audio but anyone expecting bitstreamed audio data to actually have a sound difference at the $200/300 will be sorely disappointed. What it *can* be useful for is doing pro-logic decoding in-box so if your soundcard isn't up to par, I'd understand the need for the bells and whistles. In the end though, it all gets converted to an analog signal to be sent to each individual speaker and then even further, gets down to copper twine wrapped around a magnet. If your computer already has the capability to decode a DTS-MA track in media player classic, saving the money there and putting it toward a larger speaker might be wise.

Still want a in-the-box simplicity though? Get this:

Then this:

That's a HOT deal. (

Sorry to OP, I know he wanted to keep the snobs out of the thread.

Yes.

I'm fairly certain the sub in your Z5500 could outperform it; you'd be downgrading.

When coming from the best speaker system the PC audio market had to offer (Let's leave the ProMedia's out of the picture) you can't go to the cheapest home theater sub and expect a better value. Even the Polk one I showed you is rather weak but it's a great starting point.

I've got a logi thx 5.1 that's about 10 years old now. The newer ones look nicer but can't justify the price as mine still work. The best sounding small speaking setup I've ever come across.
