Warmish? AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 939 $109 OEM Newegg

The Toledo version of the X2 3800 has 2x1MB L2 cache with half of each disabled, effectively making it 2x512KB. I have one, it OC's to 2.5GHz at ~1.48V so they aren't necessarily sh1tty oc'ers because of it.

Are you sure about this? All info I can find on the Manchester x2 3800+ seems to be the exact same -- 2x512k, not 2x1mb. On AMD's site, it appears that the slowest 2x1mb chip is the x2 4000+...

Yes, I am completely sure. As I said, I own one. They physically have 2x1MB, because they are Toledo cores (same cores used in the 2x1MB X2's), but half of each of the 1MB L2 caches is disabled, which effectively makes it 2x512KB. Presumably they had a surplus of Toledo cores, or part of the caches were defective (more likely I think), so they just disabled half the cache and sold them as Toledo-based X2 3800's.

How much performance boost can one expect by upgrading to this X2 3800 Dual core chip from my current Athlon 64 3000 single core? I am not a gamer but run video encode/decode and multimedia/multitasking stuff. Thanks.

Likely you would see a significant jump in encoding performance, since most take advantage of multiple core setups these days. I've seen 30-40% faster encode times using my Opty 165@2.6GHz over my Opty 146@3Ghz.

Thanks for your comment. I might just jump on this one......DO you think I can continue to use my stock heatsink/fan ( came with the AThlon 64 3000 ) or do I need to buy a new unit for the X2 3800 ? New Thermal Paste too I suppose..... Thanks!

If you were to get one, the stock 3000 hsf would probably be sufficient if you don't plan on overclocking the X2.

It says "in stock" for me at 7:51 PM PST. I will be in the market for a another 939 cpu soon but not at the moment so I'll leave this stock alone for the rest of you 😉

OOS again. In fact, practically every 939 processor appears OOS for me...

fs/ft forum, they're always in stock there, plus you can help out a fellow at'er 😉.
