*WARM* Seagate 200GB 8MB 7200RPM $103@BB No Rebates

I consider this a pretty hot deal if your local BB still has them. I found the Seagate 200GB drive at my local (Mentor, OH) Best Buy on Clearance for $103. I also saw the tag at another Best Buy but they were out of the drives. This leads me to believe it may be a national price for those that have any left. $103 for a retail box 200GB 8MB hard drive with no rebates to deal with is a pretty good deal for those who hate rebates. Yeah, you can get the same drive at Newegg for $109, but it's the OEM without any cables or software. Oh, and the retail version comes with a decent backup software package as well.

As a past Maxtor fan I must reiterate the following:

Maxtor = 1 year warranty (down from 3 years)

Seagate = 5 year warranty

Which to choose?

I classified this deal as warm because there are a ton of Maxtor fans on this board, but I agree that the 5 year warranty is the deal-sealer.

I haven't installed it yet to see how it performs, but I'd imagine it performs nearly the same as any other 200GB 8MB 7200RPM drive out there. One might be faster than another, but negligibly so.

These are usually whisper-quiet , as opposed to the "Rattlin'" Maxtor...

IMHO Seagate>WD>Maxtor

The warranty tips for the Seagate, but I've personally had better reliability with Maxtor. As for noise, there is a utility that can really make a big difference in head seeking noise with Maxtor drives.

I recently swapped a 120GB Maxtor into my TIVO. I was complaining about the head seeking noise. Someone recommended the above utility. I set this drive to "quiet" and the head seeking noise is almost totally gone. If you want to adjust your TIVO drive, just make sure you don't connect the drive to your computer and boot to Windows. Only boot to a TIVO setup disk or a DOS boot disk. There is room for the setacm files on a normal Windows DOS boot disk.

I wish I would have seen this a couple of days ago. I just bought the Maxtor from OD. I would have paid a little more for this drive. Especially the way my luck has been the last week.

I was trying to upgrade the drive in my tivo that I just bought a couple of weeks ago. The 120 Gig that I had laying from prior RMA was acting strange so I ran utilites on it. Well lets just say it is going back again. A 160 that I had laying around new in box ended up being bad also. Of course the warranty was up 9-29.

I would have rather bought a drive the company is willing to stand behind. But sometimes price wins out. 😉 Especially when you need another drive.
