For those of you who are building dual pII servers, this is probably the best proc to use.

PII-450Mhz $68.50

I see used ones going on ebay for more than this.

I guess so. Check out pricewatch - they have the P2 450 @ $85 but P2 Xeons at $10-$30! Maybe due to lack of motherboard support for Xeons the demand for the P2 is higher? Got me...

I know the Xeon Chip can be found cheaper used, but i think motherboards for the CPU are pretty scarce to find.

The reason I posted this link, is perhaps someone is trying to build a cheap dual cpu system, and use an M/B that was bought cheap on Ebay, or like me, upgrade a work server from dual PII-233's to Dual PII-450's.

I was looking on ebay for used PII-450's, and found them to be expensive, plus no real gurantee that they work.

This is a nice warm deal because there are many P-II motherboards in use in the world where a 450 is the highest speed processor they can take. These chips are usually more expensive than a P-III 550, so it's nice to see them coming down a bit.

I finally got my Slot 1 933's from CompGeeks on Friday, for my dual system - their shipping has been pretty slow lately, so make sure you choose 2-day air if you need them anytime soon.

Not crapping, but a 400 is less than half price on PW. Can't imagine there being that much of a difference. Is there?

If my memory serves me correct, the PII-450's outperformed the PIII-550's.

Jester6:

The discussiom above may be moot since the links that you've all provided are for PIII-450 @$68.50 and NOT PII-450. So, I don't think a PIII-450 will outperform a PIII-550. The PII-450s I believe are around $79. The link is:

Please verify what I've posted. I may be wrong, but I've tried to verify everything berfore posting.

P2's have a 512K cache, P3's have a 256K cache. If you are going to the trouble of building a dual processor system, go for the Xeon's. P2-450 Xeon's with 2MB of cache can be had for $75 on pricewatch (search for xeon 2mb). The higher cache is what you want to help boost the I/O performance. Seriously, Mhz is not where it's at these days... most systems rarely use their full cpu potential except when something bombs.

scoreadeal - You need to try Distributed Computing, hehehehehe. :) With DC, MHz counts for 95% of your output and, thus, MHz IS where it's at. :)

OK, I need to look more closely at what I read.

I stand corrected, it's a P3-450MHz, not a P2-450Mhz.

Specs seems similar to each other.

Oh well, you win some and you lose some.
