Looks nice but I don't trust resellers with a babe wearing a headset in the upper corner.

Are widescreen monitors measured on their diagonal like traditional monitors? I mean, what is the height a width of a 17" widescreen monitor?

its 17" diagonal actual screen size.

i have this monitor and its really good. at this price is is pretty cheap. i got mine for $400 back in may from some shady place on ebay. at the time that was scorching hot since this is a $700 monitor.

its got some cool features.

it pivots for one thing. the screen is ridiculously bright, and its great for watching dvds on.

i suppose the only minor gripe is the dvi cable is seperate (thats like $8 only) 25ms is enough for most games, i dotn really notice any blurring ever, but i am not like an FPS player or much of a gamer at all.

its very sharp in both analog and dvi though

Can't find much info on this monitor... any reviews anywhere?

edit: also "ONLY DROP SHIP NO RETURN " can't be a good thing...

when i bought this monitor... well it was the cheapest. but feature wise it is right up there with the 17" sony and samsunt 172t.

the differences are not too much. this ones contrast ratio is not as good as samsung or sony, but i believe it has more nits of brightness than those two.

the sony one has a/v jacks but no dvi. the samsung doesnt pivot. they are all 25ms. philips LG makes their own panels, so they know what they are doing. it also is a pretty nice looking monitor.

the base can be removed for vesa mounting. the drop ship thing is that they probably have an outside supplier instead of tiger's own warehouses . no return means proabbly exchange only.

hans007, thanx for the info. What are the actual dimensions of the screen itself? For example, my 1801fp is 360mm x 289mm
TIA,

its 14.7 x 8.8 inches

or 373 x 224 in mm.

its not as much space as a regular 17" 4:3 monitor. basically you buy this monitor for 2 things. it is one of the more stylish looking monitors out there too. movies watch better, and it is very very bright.

if you are just looking for a work monitor this probably isnt the best deal, though at this price the slightly less viewable area is ok since its so cheap and a good brand.

i cant find it on philip's page anymore so maybe its discountinued. i do not know.

Keep in mind that widescreen monitors give you less screen space. I don't know what marketing genius came up with this idea but I bet they cost less to manufacture than the 4:3 displays because of the decreased size, but they will still sell because people associate widescreen with monitors the same way they do with TVs and they think they are getting more for their money.

This is part of the reason I asked, earlier in the post, if the widescreens were still measured diagonally. I mean, a 17" widescreen monitor is small. Nothing to get too excited about except for the "chic" factor.

Here is a review from CNET

Phillip's Site

I'm still not sure whether I want it or not :/

the review mentions bad image quality.

the one problem this monitor does have is that 1280x768 for the area of screen it is, is fairly small resolution. so individual pixels are somewhat large compared to a 1280x1024 17".

its the same phenomenon you see when comparing the sharpness of a 19" 1280x1024 LCD to a 17" one. so that is another thing i suppose to be aware of.

I personally wish more if not all displays were 16:9 - it just seems like a more natural screen space, both for documents and games.

Speaking of games, how do they function on a 'widescreen' monitor? Is the image just stretched, or is it correct aspect ration and the extra area is filled in with rendered space? Or maybe there's bars?

I had a chance to play with a Sony Widescreen LCD that was 1280x768. It had an option of stretching or not stretching when using a different video mode. So you could have it either way, stretched and distorted or with correct aspect ratio and empty "bars" where nothing is drawn.

I'd imagine that most if not all widescreen LCDs also have the option.

on this monitor, you can set it to stretch or not stretch.

its actually a 16:10 monitor. they make it 768 high so it can do 1024x768 perfectly. if it were 16:9 it would have been 1280x720

I think this deal is pretty hot actually. The "no returns" thing just means you have to deal with Phillips rather than Global which is probably a good thing. I called Phillips and they said they will replace any monitor with 4 bad pixels in the 1 year warranty period.

The consensus seems to be that this monitor is great, just not for $700. Another good review here: http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content.asp?id=philips17wide&page=1

I placed an order on Friday but have only received an order acknowlegment and not a confirmation email. Did anybody else bite on this?

Are you sure it comes with a one year warranty? I was reading on the philips refurb site and was under the impression that their factory refurbished items only come with a 90 day warranty.

Anybody get order confirmation yet?

I spoke with a CSR this morning who indicated that demand for these was way more than they expected and that they're assessing whether or not they can fill the orders.
