So all you need is one Crossfire edition GPU + a standard GPU and a crossfire motherboard to use crossire correct? How fast is this vs dual 7900 GTX SLI?

Yes, that's all you need. I'm not sure about the speed comparison, you'll have to search around for the benchmarks. There should be a few lying around.

The price on the X1900 CFE has to come down because the new X1950 is dropping real soon...and it's supposed to be so much faster that you'd basically have to be crazy to buy the older stuff at their old prices.

I think if it came down some more it might be worth it to get some cross-fire action going, but at these prices I'd just wait for the X1950...

Newer X1950 has an msrp according to online sources of $399 or $449, and is faster than Nvidia's GX2. Best to wait till the end of the month, can't hurt and it's only a few weeks away. Launch is around the final week of august with some immediate availability expected.
