Buy.com has this cool drive for $171.95 (part number: 07N3931) and $178.95 (part number: 07N5640). Add $6 for shipping and a $30 coupon and the deal is tempting, not hot but still tempting.

I want to point out that I think the cheaper, $171.95 07N3931 drive is actually the RETAIL drive. Can someone verify that? I've emailed IBM and no reply. I heard that IBM don't have any warranty on OEM drives, and that's really something to keep in mind.

It is my understanding that IBM will not warranty any OEM drive that is actually used by OEM integrators. For example, IBM won't touch an IBM drive from a Gateway PC with a ten-foot pole. However, it appears they will warranty "oem"/"bare" new drives sold through resellers. I bought a couple of bare drives from Onvia a month ago, and they said that IBM does honor the warranty for 3 years like their other drives. I have not taken the chance to verify with IBM themselves, so take this with a grain (or mine) of salt.

about their warranty. I have a IBM 13.5 gig ultra 66 7200 rpm OEM drive that had bad sectors So i called IBM and found out that it was covered with a 3 year warranty. I shipped them the drive and they sent me a brand new one

Heya all,

Just gotta say, I got a couple of these drives when they were bottomed out at buy.com and onvia. They are by FAR the best IDE drives I've gotten to work with. I put them in a KT7-RAID and everything is smooth as glass. Fast rotation, fast access, reliable, and quiet on top of it all!

90 gig of RAID-0 goodness.... Mmmmmmmmm....

I know there's a constant steam of bargain-basement drives showing up here, but let me try to encourage the masses to spend that extra $20 and get a quality drive that you'll be proud of.

I ordered to of the 07N3931 drives 2 weeks ago and was shipped one of each 07N3931 and 07N5640. Does anybody know what the difference is in these? I want to use them in a raid array.

07N3931 shows up as a valid drive with a 3-year warranty here.

07N5640 is not on there. Buy.com does have the retail boxed version here.

I'm with FunkyD here.

1) OEM/Bare drives are under 3 yr warr.
2) IBM HDD's are the BEST by FAR.

how quiet are they really? I have been trying to decide between IBM and Maxtor... I love performance, but quietness is high on my list after using two WD (6.4G and 8.4G) that are loud as hell when seeking!

can you repost that link verifying that drive as under the 3year warranty? I clicked on your link and it's a page not found error. Thanks man!
