Dell refurb's are covered by the same 3 year warranties of the new systems and are normally a pretty safe bet and a great deal. They are normally returned units and canceled sales. Following your link I did not see any information regarding the save $100. However after reviewing the fine print at the bottom of the page I believe that this deal require 6 months of AOL. Fine print:

Availability may be limited, especially during peak times. Must register for AOL within 90 days of receiving computer. To avoid paying monthly membership fees, cancel during the 6-month promotional period. Even during promo period, telephone access charges on your phone bill (call your phone co. for details) and surcharges for premium services and 800# access may apply, including in AK. For new, 18+ U.S. members with major credit card or checking account only. Limited time offer. America Online, AOL, the Triangle logo and Buddy List® are registered service marks of America Online, Inc.

thanks for the input. btw i looked at the aol deal. i believe it is actually a giveaway to new aol members, like the one they are offering on new computers, though i could be wrong.

my guess is that its one of those deals where you get 6 months free but if you forget to notify them, then at 6 months and one day they are billing it to your credit card, that's why they have to be explicit about cancellation in the first six months. anyway, i'm foolish enough to subscribe to the aol 10/mo deal so i don't think they'll charge me twice.

btw the prices listed are already discounted. you have to click on a particular machine to find out what the non-discount price would be.

not certain if it is fate or just naivete: by the time i returned to the dell site to purchase my machine they were all sold, save one i didn't want. i believe i take today's fool award.
lesson learned: buy the darn thing before you post it.

Hconnor, keep watching the site, I've heard that they replenish their stock frequently.
It may not be too late! :)
