One correction should be made, it has a Headset Jack. The Headset isn't included.

So these VTech phones are dirt cheap everywhere -- are they any good?

Keeping in mind that this phone is $25.00:

The Ups (I have the caller ID Version of this phone
CallerID=$59 - http://www.vtechphones.com/topfrm.asp?pid=10
CallerID w/ Headset Jack = $79 -http://www.vtechphones.com/topfrm.asp?pid=11

1) Spare Batter Charger (Doubles as a battery backup when power is out). In addition, if you get the 2 batteries you never have to worry about the "memory effect". Battery life has been great, I think we change the battery (swap) every few days and we talk for an hour here and there so it must be at least 5hrs talk time. That's conservative, Maybe more. With the backup battery in the charger, Once the one battery dies you swap for the new one, no waiting to recharge! Plenty of warning too, Usually about 5-10minutes of talk time when the first low battery beep starts (see negative comment about beep below).
2) Good Sound Quality (both mic and speaker). No complaints from people I talk to and I can always hear them fine, every time there's been static it's been on the other end.
3) Decent Range (I can't compare) but this will get me out to my mailbox which is down the street from my house (not right in front). I'm in a somewhat crowded development, so, that's good enough for me.
4) Digital Transmission: No eavesdroppers.

The downs:
1) The ergonomics: The pits. Worst Ergonomics in a phone I've ever owned (but I've used others that suck as bad or worse). If you want to rest the phone on your shoulder (the cheapskates handfree phone) you will regret it. You have to get the phone just right. Of course, with the headset, you'll be ok, but, that means you have to hook it up all the time.
2) The low battery warning beep is LOUD and in your EAR and can't be turned off AND the other party will hear it also. It starts out slow and repeats more often the lower the battery gets, so, if you hear it, recharge (swap) the battery (or loose your hearing).
3) The channels change automagically. Sometimes it takes a bit to find the right channel. No button to override.
4) My Caller ID version doesn't have the headset. :-(

Overall: For $25 + $10S&H(OUCH!) worth having a spare.
