This seems like a decent, if not great deal, at Overstock.com
http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi

Windows CE apps, 16 MB RAM, a backlit screen, and a decent sized keyboard. Shopper.cnet.com is showing current street prices at around $950-1000. Cnet's review gives it 7/10 for a $999 street price. Check out the HP Jornada 620 before you buy, however. This would be just the thing for a student who needs to word process in the library, or a businessperson typing something up on a plane.

400 might be still steep for students like me, another alternative is to get a Pocket Pc and an external keyboard for it and you'll get new-er technology, but at the price of a smaller screen..

I know a lot of students who spend $1500-2500 on a really nice notebook, and then are disappointed that they can't play Quake 3. Much better, IMO, to buy what is basically a portable word processor, then spend $1000-2000 on a home setup that can do _everything_ really well. (I'd also prefer a $1,000 notebook and a $1,000 home computer to a $2,000 notebook, as the $1,000 home computer will blow away a notebook that is twice as expensive.)

I've just bought one myself, but at egghead.com, and used the code FUSA5, and got it for 396.48 brand new.

Here's a review on this (I think) cool product:

http://www.canada.cnet.com/hardware...g=st.co.7044-418-128795.nav.7044-418-128795-1

And here's LOTS of reviews, using google:

http://www.google.com/search?q=Sharp+Mobilon+TriPad+PV-6000,+Review&btnG=Google+Search

I agree that this product is great as a word processor, browsing the web (33 k modem included), email machine on the go, very light 3.2 pounds(important believe me, as I used to own the 10 pounder Insprion 7000) battery life is 10-12 hours, plus there's an extra battery included, accepts compact flash, IrDA, RJ-11, modular phone cable, and have I mentioned that it's touch screen that's useable as a 'laptop' or a workpad!!!

Ok, I feel like a salesman. Check this product out.

http://www.wincecity.com/boards/Mobilon/

I'm sorry if I've caused anyone to think this was a good product and inspired them to buy it. I myself thought that it was and bought one! Now I see this, and luckily Egghead took forever to ship to me. Yesterday I recieved it and have yet to open it. I was lucky (but not too lucky, as there's a 15 per cent restocking fee, plus I've got to pay shipping :( Out 80 dollars!!

I apologise everyone.

In case anyone doesn't know what hanybanoub is referring to, here's a representative post from the forum he lists:

"Ric:Even if you dismiss the sound recording problems and the lack of included handwriting software the other Hardware-Problems like when playing WAV and MP3 files with a CF card causing a crash that results in a soft reset and loss of data!or the Power-Peak problems that prevents the Users/owners of the PV-6000 unit from using the Microdrive(Which is currently one of the BEST storage mediums that has just been Upgraded to 1-GB! with lower power consumption!) and the Total Lack of support by Sharp add up to a Huge NO-NO for any one thinking about purchasing one of these units.
Hopefully Sharp will start addressing some of these issues but i wouldn't hold your breath as the Major regulatory agencies(FTC,FTC division of advertising,BBB,National Fraud info center)are still in the process of investigating and prosecuting Sharp over "ALL" the Hardware-Defects/Design-Flaws(WHITE-OUTS/BLACK-OUTS, Fluctuating/Shifting Contrast ,Frequent Random Hard-crashes casing total memory loss, Poor power management systems, Defective/Design-flawed Cable/ribbons which cause total touch-screen failure)Mis-specifications(Battery burn-times,Modem-speed,ROM Upgrade-NOT)that reside in the HC-4000 series mobilons!

Lets hope that the regulatory agencies use the strength & power gained by going after Sharp for the HC-4000 series units to maximum when compelling Sharp to rectify the issues with the PV-6000 TriPad units.

Excellent regards and best wishes to you and your PV-6000 unit.Hopefully you will not need to have its serviced for any hardware-problems.good luck...CONAN"tiger"WHITE:=}} "

Ouch! Well, I did say "warm deal," after all.
