Get a VTech 2.4 GigaHz phone with dual keypads and dual speakerphones for a decent price. You can even buy extra handsets to use with the base unit.

Go to Staples and search for VTech 2431.

Staples has this phone for $149.99 plus taxes. Price match them with Onvia who has it for $129.99 and free shipping. Then apply a $25 Staples coupon, and get free shipping for orders over $50.

I got the phone for $118.51 after applicable California sales tax. The price match took all of 5 minutes.

There are plenty of nice 2.4ghz phones out there for much less than this, specifically Toshiba phones. I've seen them go well under $100 without any price matching. I suppose if "dual" keypads and speakerphones is extremely important to you, without doing any research beforehand, this might be a decent deal, but the Toshiba I personally own and picked up on ub1d for $59? $69? Somewhere in that range, but a lot less than $118. Either way, this deal doesn't sound too hot =/

Yes, there are cheaper 2.4 GHz phones out there, but most places have this particular one for $150.

I've been looking for one with dual speakerphones and this one was a good deal for me.

If you wanted to make the deal even better, you can always add another $20 of stuff in the order and then use a $40 off $150 coupon.

It's a warm deal and not a "hot" one. Thus the title of the post.

I personally bought this phone about 3 months ago. I paid $149.00 for it and returned it. I was not happy at all. The sound quality is horrible. The range is good but sometimes it disconnects your call and the handset starts searching for the base, even when you are right next to the base. Maybe I had a lemon but I decided to invest my $159 in something else. About the dialpad on the base, is a good feature but the buttons are so, so, so small that it prents you from dailing the numbers quickly. Personally I did not like this phone at all. That is just my .02

VTech doesn't exactly make the BEST phones. Is this a digital or analog? I would seriously wait a bit until 2.4s go down and buy yourself a nice Sony phone.

edmeister,

I don't personally own the phone, but like I said, I do own the Toshiba and am EXTREMELY happy with it. Sound quality is the best i've ever owned on a portable, clarity is amazing, and people can always hear me on the other end, even long distance. The phone I have also has call-waiting ID so that if you have it as a feature through your telco company, you can tell who's calling even when on another call.

Possibly the nicest thing about this phone, it comes with 2 batteries, one in the phone, one in the base, both are the same though, so if one runs dead, you can swap them out on the fly. Not only that, if your power goes out, the base switches to battery power, voila, you still have a working portable phone! I'd look into the toshiba if I were you, I have not a single bad thing to say about it.

Oh and in case you ARE returning your VTech, the Toshiba model number is the SG-1000

I agree with others here about V-Tech's quality. They are a good buy when Staples wants to give them to you for $9.99 or even free, but I wouldn't pay a lot for one. They look cool but are average at best.

I picked up the $10 VTech from Onvia. Although is is only a 900 mhz phoen I'm pretty happy with it. If someone doesn't need the extended range of the new phones, the 900 mhz phone work just fine.

I talked to a VTech technical guy sometime back. He told me to wait for the vt2631 to come out. it has a answering machine built in, and he also said that a lot of bugs in the original vtech got fixed in this one.

i see them on pre-order etc in different places.

To the guy that said Just get yourself a nice sony phone, if you knew what you were talking about then you would mentioned that sony cordless phones are made by VTECH the only difference is sony sells it for a higher price than VTECH would sell there phones for, but sense you think you know it all you should of mentioned it! Also not all gigahert phones are the same, Vtech has just about the best digital security you can get from a 2.4 phone Toshiba makes Uniden 2.4 phones too. Siemens makes a couple of companies too.

holy sh*t! v-tech makes sony's phones? cool... well guys, i think this is pretty warm deal because this phone looks bada**. personally i've never seen a better price than this. the panasonics work really well, but don't look half as nice as this v-tech, not to mention that this v-tech can have more than 1 phone working off the base. i dunno how well this phone in particular works, but i do know that i am very happy with my 900 mhz v-tech phone, but it receives too much interference in these damned dorms. oh well, i should've bought the 2.4gig phone. :)

Its harder to secure 2.4 gig phones than it is on 900mhz phones because 2.4 has stronger bandwidth but also it can be picked up by other public airways such as CB radios and pretty powerful scanners and some sort even satelite dishes can cause some interferences but you would have to be in a very dense surroundings such as busy traffic or school dorms, anything with a popularity factor of high freqency devices to disturb.

Difference between 900mhz and 2.4 is only reception distance. 900mhz digital phones(900mhz base to handheld) can only travel so far but has less the easvdroppers problem. 900 2.4ghz phones(900mhz on the handheld and 2.4 on the base) has greater distance but can more of security problem from the outside environment.

The security of your phone also depends on why type of spread spectrum transmission technique you are using.

If you are using direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) then there is really no security, and you are streaming your signal across the entire frequency range of the phone.. 900 MHz describes a frequency range, and not the exact frequency the phone works at.

Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum breaks up the frequency range into smaller channels, and sends the signal across several of those frequencies, but hopping between them periodically, so that if someone is monitoring a specific frequency, they only will get a small portion of the converstion until the signal hops to the next frequency.

I took some wireless communications training 5 years ago for wireless networking, and the phones work on the same principle. 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz devices work on unlicensed radio frequencies so all kinds of devices can interfere with the signal. If you pick up too much interference on 900 MHz phones, switch to a 2.4 and you'll have less devices competing for the use of that freqency.

ReMeDy{WcS},

hahaha, I was about to say what you said about the Sony phones being made by V-TECH. I laugh every time I see "V-tech sucks. Get Sony instead" comments.

I hafta vouch for Vtech phones, based just one my limited experience with that $10 one from Onvia.(got two) It rocks. Once you've used dual speakerphones, you'll never want to go back. So many times I'm holding or want someone to listen in and I'm not near the base where the speakerphone on the handset comes in handy. Clarity and distance are good. Really no complaints. Thanks for the info about vtech making Sony phones. I don't think the majority of us knew that... makes sense though because the vtech units I've seen and used are rock solid as far as features and just the construction of the phone. With that said... title is correct. This is a warm deal, but a deal nonetheless if you are in the market and need one.. otherwise wait until a better one like the Onvia $10 one comes along :) You'll love the intercom function btw. Great for freaking out your roommate.

i like mine.. especially the speakerphone option on the handset. so when you're lying down and your ears are starting to hurt, you can always switch it to speakerphone and just chill. the quality isn't too bad either.

All the sony phones that I have ever used have been pieces of junk. I have also had the same experience with AT&T phones. I think the best phones out there are Panasonic. Those panasonic phones last through anything.
